GAME TWO BOX SCORE
(BOWIE, Md.) The Lady Bulldogs dropped a pair of games to Division I Howard University, falling 13-0 and 12-3 to the Lady Bison.
Bowie State was only able to manufacture three hits in game one with freshman
Mariela Hernandez (Del Rio, TX, Los Fresnos) leading the way with two and sophomore
Amanda Ray (Damascus, MD, Damascus) added one.
Brittany Barker and Lorae Robinson tallied five runs a piece against the Lady Bulldogs (11-12). Barker went five-of six on the afternoon and tallied three RBI while Robinson drove in two runs.
The Lady Bison exploded in the second inning with eight runs. Samantha Gatson opened up a hitting frenzy for the Bison with a single through the left side, as Trina Kindred and Andascha Moore followed with singles of their own. Sborz tabbed an RBI with her second double and Robinson immediately followed with a double of her own to bring in two additional runs. Rebbecca Kirshner, Emily Johnson and Moore added singles in the monumental inning, and Ciera Gordon posted Howard's third double, bringing in another run.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to hold Howard in the third, however Gatson lit up the scoreboard once again with a solo home run in the fourth.
Carly Martin and Gatson split the mound in the five-inning opener. Martin faced 11 batters and struck out three, walked one and surrendered a mere hit in her three innings of work. Gatson came in for the final two innings and gave up two hits and struck out two batters.
Hernandez (3-10) pitched five innings, allowed 20 hits, walked two and struck out one.
In the second game, Howard opened up a 3-0 advantage in the first inning. However, Bowie State trimmed their deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning.
Sophomore
Justine Smith (Silver Spring, MD, James Hurbert Blake) reached after being hit by an Emily Johnson pitch. A single up the middle of the Lady Bison infield by sophomore
Kristen Lee (Germantown, MD, Northwest), scored Smith for Bowie State's first run. A sacrifice fly by Ray later in the inning scored senior
Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair).
In the third inning, Hernandez reached base via an error and later scored following a single to left by freshman
Haley Snyder (Pennsauken, NJ, Pennsauken) to tie the game at 3-3. Unfortunately, that would be the last time the Lady Bulldogs would cross the dish.
Bowie State missed two scoring opportunities in innings one and four, leaving the bases loaded.
Howard's Emily Johnson took over the pitcher's circle and struck out ten and walked only one batter. Johnson allowed three runs on nine hits, securing the 12-3 victory for the Bison.
Also securing the Lady Bison's second win of the day came from a strong offensive output in the sixth and final inning. Robinson leadoff with a bunt for a single and went on to steal second. Marisa Coats doubled to bring Robinson home. Barker launched a three-run homer to bring the Lady Bison up 11-3. Howard scored their 12th run of the game from Moore who scored on a wild pitch.
The Bowie State trio of Smith, Lee and Snyder paced the Lady Bulldogs with a pair of hits each. Bowie State's other three hits in the nightcap came from Ray, sophomore
Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) and freshmen
Adria Lewis.
Alexander (5-2) handled pitching duties in game two, going five and third innings, walking five and striking out one.
Bowie State is scheduled to travel to Shepherd (WV) University tomorrow (March 30), to face the Rams in a 1 pm non-conference game. The Lady Bulldogs will follow that with a trip to Elizabeth City (NC) State University on Saturday (April 2) before returning home to host Goldey-Beacom College on Sunday (April 3) at 12 noon.
