(BOWIE, Md.) The Bowie State University softball team closed out their 2011 regular season home schedule, dropping a pair to Chowan University 5-0 and 11-3. The trio of sophomore Amanda Ray (Damascus, MD, Damascus, Mount St. Mary's) and freshmen Kiara Washington (Bowie, MD, Bowie) and Adria Lewis (Cumberland, MD, Fort Hill) led the BSU Lady Bulldogs with two hit each in the doubleheader setback.

Kiara Washington
Tricia Gorman drove in Fahren Munro with a double in the first inning to open the scoring for Chowan. Gorman would go two-for-three at the dish, with one RBI and one run scored. Both offenses hit a snag in the middle innings as the game remained 1-0 entering the sixth inning. Bowie State's first hit in game one came in the bottom of the third courtesy of a single by Washington.

Ray and Lewis recorded one hit each in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Bulldogs were still unable to score a run.

In the top of the sixth, a Mindy Byrd double brought home Brooke Owen to give Chowan a 2-0 advantage. The Hawks then put the game away in the seventh, as they scored three runs off three hits. Liz Sill had a two-RBI single to cap the scoring.

Liz Hipple went two-for-four at the plate, scoring one run and driving in another. Munro scored a team-high two runs. Christie Wright (11-8) pitched a complete game four-hitter. She struck out six batters and did not surrender a walk.

The Bowie State defense was disappointing in the opener with the Lady Bulldogs committing five errors.

The Chowan offense got going earlier and more often in game two. Four of the first five Hawk batters scored in the first inning. Bowie State (14-16, 8-4 CIAA) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Bowie State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first, cutting the Chowan lead down to 4-2.  Senior Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) singled up the middle for BSU's first hit of game two and advanced to third thanks to a double to left by Ray.  Lewis singled to left, scoring McClay and Ray.

Following a pitching change by the Hawks, sophomore Kristen Lee (Germantown, MD, Northwest) laced her first triple of the season in the bottom of the second inning.  Fellow sophomore Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) followed that with a single to center field, scoring Lee.

Chowan (31-17, 17-1 CIAA) capitalized on three Bowie State errors over the next two innings to score three runs. After three innings, the Hawks held a 7-3 advantage. Liz Sill drove in Gorman in the fourth to add a run.

Megan Wade and Hipple each had one RBI in the sixth inning, as the Hawks scored three runs. Amber Matthews pitched a perfect sixth to wrap up the game and give Chowan the 11-3 victory.

Allie Kolezynski went two-for-four in the game and recorded two RBI. Tricia Gorman was a perfect four-for-four at the dish and scored two runs to go along with one RBI. Hipple had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs.

The Lady Bulldogs hit the ball a little better in game two, getting seven hits off three different Chowan pitchers. However, miscues haunted Bowie State in the nightcap as well as the Lady Bulldogs committed four errors

Bowie State travels to Lincoln University of Pennsylvania – Friday (April 15) for a 2 pm divisional contest against the Lady Lions.
