(PETERBURG, Va.) Chowan scored one run in the first to take an early lead. The Hawks then scored three runs in the third inning to open up a 4-0 cushion. Liz Hipple and Li Sill each had doubles in the inning.
Bowie State then stormed back offensively in the top of the fourth with four runs to tie the game at four. The Lady Bulldogs were not done, however, as they put three more runs on the board in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.
Chowan (33-17) kept that deficit until the bottom of the sixth inning when Brenna Thomas, Liz Hipple, and Liz Sill each scored a run. Chowan benefited from two BSU errors in the inning. BSU's errors really hurt as the Lady Bulldogs committed six overall.
Tricia Gorman showed why she is the national leader in RBI in the seventh inning. With Allie Kolezynski on second base, Gorman nailed a single to right field to easily score Kolezynski and cap the comeback.
Sill finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Mindy Byrd had two RBI while Alex Allen connected for three hits.
Christie Wright picked up another win on the mound. She pitched the final 2.0 innings of the game, giving up two hits and no runs.
Bowie State held a 14-13 hit advantage with five Lady Bulldogs' players (sophomores
Justine Smith (Silver Spring, MD, James Hurbert Blake) and
Amanda Ray (Damascus, MD, Damascus, Mount St. Mary's) and freshmen
Renelle Traylor (Hayward, CA, San Lorenzo),
Haley Snyder (Pennsauken, NJ, Pennsauken) and
Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, MD, Frederick Douglass) recording two hits each. Traylor and Williams paced Bowie State with a pair of RBI each.
Freshman
Mariela Hernandez (Del Rio, TX, Los Fresnos) (11-13) pitched her second straight game of the day, going 6 1/3 innings, gave up four earned runs, struck out three and walked two.
With the loss, Bowie State (21-19) drops into the consolation loser's bracket and will have a tournament rematch with Fayetteville State – Friday (April 22) at 10 am at the Petersburg Sports Complex, weather permitting.
