(PETERSBURG, Va.) Jessica Mattia tossed a three-hit shutout to lift the Virginia State's Lady Trojans to their second win of the day and into the CIAA Softball Championship semifinals after an 8-0 five-inning win over Bowie State.
Virginia State (21-14) will face Northern Division champion Chowan on Friday evening on the VSU campus to determine which team will face tournament unbeaten and Southern Division champ Winston-Salem State in the championship round on Saturday.
Mattia struck out six and walked only one, quickly working through a Bowie State lineup that needed eight innings to knock off Fayetteville State 9-7 in the morning elimination game.
Christina Maye was 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Trojans (21-14), ending the game early with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Alyssa Winston added two hits and an RBI while Sharron Lipford had a pair of hits, an RBI and three runs scored.
Virginia State, which drummed Shaw 8-1 in an morning elimination game, built a 6-0 lead through three innings, breaking the game open with two runs in the second inning and three in the third.

Renelle Traylor (Hayward, CA, San Lorenzo) took the loss. Freshman
Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, MD, Frederick Douglass) had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs. BSU closes out the season with a 22-20 overall record.
