Box Score (LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.) Tough defense and second half run made all the difference as Bowie State rolled to a 63-44 divisional win over the Lady Lions of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs improve their record to 3-13 overall (3-6 CIAA and 2-1 North).
The first 20 minutes of the game was nip and tuck but free throws were a problem for both teams. Bowie State made just 6-of-18 from the charity stripe (33 percent) while Lincoln (Pa.) made 10-of-17 (58 percent).
It was a slow start for both teams after the opening tip as neither team would score until Lincoln's Cynthia Johnson hit a jumper at the 17:49 mark. The lead changed hands six times in the first period and also featured seven ties, including a 32-32 deadlock at halftime.
Bowie State opened the second half with an 11-0 run until Lincoln's Brittney Waters drilled a 3-pointer at the 15:45 mark to stop the run. The Lady Bulldogs defense remained relentless for another four minutes and held a 48-37 advantage midway through the final period.
The only Lady Lions to score points in the second half were Denyse Moore and Cynthia Johnson. Moore scored a team-high 16 points (12 in the first half) and led Lincoln (Pa) with three assists and two blocks. Johnson finished with 13 points (five in the second half) and four rebounds.
Lincoln (5-16, 1-8 CIAA, 1-2 North) shot a horrific 13 percent (4-of-30) from the floor in the second half compared to 44 percent (12-of-27) for Bowie State. The Lady Bulldogs defense forced 21 Lady Lions' turnovers and ended the evening with a 40-22 points in the paint advantage.
Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was senior
Chanita Jordan with a career-high 20 points to go along with game-highs of nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior
Juliette Turner contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
Brooke Miles rounded out Bowie State's double figure scorers with 10 points.
The Lady Bulldogs will conclude a four-game road journey with a 5:30 pm contest at Virginia State University on Monday (January 30th).
