BULLDOGS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH 93-90 HOME WIN OVER WASHINGTON ADVENTIST

Box Score (BOWIE, Md.)  Four Bowie State University seniors were playing their final home game in the A.C. Jordan Arena and they were sent off with a 93-90 victory over Washington Adventist University.  The win puts the Bulldogs overall record at 21-5 heading into the conference tournament next week in Charlotte (N.C.)

Senior Darren Clark just missed his career-high, recording team-highs of 27 points and five assists to go along with six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.  Senior Jay Gavin and junior Byron Westmorland added 18 and 15 points respectively.  Senior Travis Hyman scored 14 points and tied for team-high rebound honors (8) with junior Dameatric Scott.

Both team shot well in the first half as the visiting Shock of Washington Adventist hit 14-of-27 from the floor (51.9 percent) and the Bulldogs made 50 percent of their first period field goals (19-of-38).  Washington Adventist and Bowie State made six first half 3-point field goals.

Bowie State held a 14-9 lead at the 15:31 mark of the first half, but Washington Adventist battled back to take their largest lead of the evening (38-27) with 6:22 remaining in the opening period.  The Bulldogs went on a 16-5 run, capped off by a Gavin lay-up to tie the game at 43-43.  The Bulldogs outscored the Shock 11-8 over the final 3:02 to take a slim 54-51 advantage into halftime.

The first half featured five ties and nine lead changes.  Washington Adventist converted 17-of-19 first half free throws (89.5 percent) compared to 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) for Bowie State.

The final period of play went back and forth with eight ties and 12 lead changes.  The largest second half lead by either team was a six point advantage (62-56) by Bowie State at the 17:01 mark.  From there, the Washington Adventist Shock dialed long distance 13 times, making seven behind the arc. 

Mark Coleman made three of his four 3-point field goals in the second half and Jamie Newton along with Desmin Wade accounted for two, second half 3-pointers each.

Washington Adventist (13-13) never led by more than two in the final half of action with their last lead coming (88-86) with 1:42 left to play following a rainmaker by Coleman.  BSU's Westmorland answered with a triple of his own on the next Bulldogs' possession to regain the lead for good.

Coleman made a living at the free throw line, sticking 6-of-8 in the second half (13-of-16 overall) and finished the game with a game-highs of 35 points and eight rebounds.  Jamie Newton torched the Bulldogs for 27 points and contributed five assists and seven rebounds for the Shock.

As a team, Washington Adventist shot an amazing 56.5 percent (13-of-23) beyond the 3-point line and converted 29-of-35 free throws (82.9 percent).  The 13 Washington Adventist 3-point field goals tied Mercyhurst (12/17/2011) for a season-high against the Bulldogs.

  Bowie State finished the game with a field goal shooting percentage of 44.4 (32-of-72), which included 8-of-20 behind the 3-point line and 84 percent (21-of-25) from the charity stripe.  The Bulldogs out-rebounded the opponent for the 16th time this season, holding a 40-32 advantage on the glass.

The Bulldogs, ranked 6th in the NCAA Atlantic Region and the No. 1 seed in the CIAA North, receive a bye in the 100th CIAA Tournament and will see their first action at 1 pm Thursday (March 1st) against an opponent to be determined.
