(SALEM, Va.) The University of Charleston (WV) Golden Eagles used a six hit, five run first inning to do all the damage they needed to cruise to a 5-0 shutout of Bowie State University. The loss, Bowie State's second of the day in the Salem Invitational, puts the Lady Bulldogs record even at 5-5 and sets the Golden Eagles record at 12-10.
The Lady Bulldogs managed only four hits with freshman
Sharde Alls accounted for two. The other two Bowie State hits (both doubles) came off the bats of fellow freshmen
Cara Nance and
Raenelle Taylor. Sophomore pitcher Mariella Hernandez gave up 11 hits, walked three, struck out two and suffered her first loss of the year (3-1).
Golden Eagles pitcher Emily Fultz struck out nine. Ashlea Wallace led the University of Charleston with three hits in four plate appearances.
Bowie State will close out day one of the Salem Invitational with a 5 pm non-conference contest against West Liberty (WV) University.
