(BOWIE, Md.)  Bowie State University made it a clean sweep against Virginia Union University beating the Lady Panthers 7-3 and 9-0 in a conference divisional matchup.  The doubleheader victory sets the Lady Bulldogs record at 7-1 in the CIAA.

Freshman Cassandra Clayborne paced Bowie State with a 4-for-7 afternoon at the plate.  Junior Justine Smith went 3-for-5, which included a double and led the Lady Bulldogs with four RBI over the two games.  Sophomores Kiara Washington and Haley Snyder went 3-for-6 from the dish.

In game one, Bowie State took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on a single to center that scored Smith.  Smith reached base safely on a throwing error by Virginia Union pitcher Quincy Lewis.

The Lady Panthers were tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when Renesha Chiles scored on an error by BSU sophomore pitcher Shelby Snyder.  Bowie State took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second, pushing two across on three hits.

Bowie State's advantage didn't last long as Virginia Union tied the game at 3-3 in top half of the 4th inning.  One of the two runs was aided by another Bowie State error.

The Lady Bulldogs regained the lead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Haley Snyder hit a leadoff single to left.  Two batters later, twin sister Shelby Snyder singled up the middle.  Washington hit a single, scoring Snyder and Snyder, advanced to second on a VUU error and put Bowie State on top for good at 5-3.

Bowie State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning with the biggest hit coming off the bat of sophomore Mariela Hernandez.  Following a leadoff single by Shelby Snyder, Hernandez laced her first double of the season.  Washington stepped to the plate and hit a single through the right side of the Lady Panthers defense, scoring junior Amanda Ray and moving Hernandez to third.  A Smith sacrifice fly to center allowed Hernandez to stroll home.

The Lady Bulldogs held a 10-6 hit advantage over the Lady Panthers in the opening game but committed four errors.

Kristina Caldwell led Virginia Union (5-18, 4-6 CIAA) in game one with two hits in three plate appearances.

Game two was all Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs pounded out 10 hits again in a 9-0 shutout.  Freshman pitcher Hayley Flint had a 6-0 cushion after two innings, allowing just one hit and was relieved in the 3rd inning by Hernandez.

The Lady Bulldogs used a four hit, three run 3rd inning to put Bowie State in position to close out the game early via the NCAA 8-run mercy rule.

Chiles opened the Virginia Union 4th inning with a triple off the top of the left center fence.  Unfortunately for the Lady Panthers, Chiles was left stranded on third.  Caldwell struck out swinging, Lewis flew out to right and Charisma Spencer went down swinging.

Clayborne paced Bowie State in the nightcap going 3-for-3 and scored three runs.  Flint earned the victory (3-2) in the circle.  Hernandez pitched the final three innings, striking out six.

Bowie State (7-7, 1-0 North) is scheduled to host the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College – Sunday (March 25th) at 12 noon in a non-conference game, weather permitting.
