Box Score 2 (BOWIE, Md.) Good things come to those who wait and Bowie State showed patience, downing conference foe Lincoln University of Pennsylvania 4-2 and 15-0.
In the opener, Lincoln (0-16 overall, 0-12 CIAA, 0-6 North) fell behind 3-0, but cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
Bowie State's first two batters in the second inning went down via a foul fly and a ground ball. Junior
Amanda Ray stepped up and singled to left center and freshman
Hayley Flint reached on an error that scored Ray. Sophomore
Kiara Washington reached on another Lincoln error, allowing Flint to score. Junior
Justine Smith stroked a double to left field, scoring Washington and giving the Lady Bulldogs a 3-0 cushion.
Lincoln remained scoreless through four innings, but Sharay DuBose led off the fifth inning with an infield hit and advanced to second when Jasmine Dabney, who went 1-for-3, reached on an infield hit. After first-year BSU head Coach Dawn Payne made a pitching change, Danielle Owes, singled through the right side and advanced to second on the play as DuBose scored and Dabney took third. Mariah Liberty reached on a fielder's choice but Dabney was thrown out at home. Erin Rucker struck out but reached first on passed ball and Owes was out in a rundown to end the Lady Lions threat.
Bowie State freshman
Cassandra Clayborne grounded out to the pitcher to start the Lady Bulldogs half of the fifth. Fellow freshman
Cara Nance followed with a single to left and made it all the way to third after an error by Lincoln's center fielder. Sophomore
Adria Lewis singled down the left field line scoring Nance for a 4-1 Lady Bulldogs lead.
Despite BSU's score in the bottom of the inning, Lincoln continued to put pressure on the Lady Bulldogs defense and plated a run in the top half of the sixth.
Lincoln's Avree Morton led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third when Sarah Danaher grounded out to the second baseman. With two down, DuBose walked and stole second. Morton scored on the throw down to second, cutting the Lady Lions deficit to 4-2.
Flint (3-2) took the win in pitching four innings. She gave up a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Rucker (0-15) took the loss, worked six innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Bowie State roughed up Rucker early and often in game two, banging out 14 hits in the Lady Bulldogs 15-0 shutout of the Lady Lions.
Lady Bulldogs' sophomore
Shelby Snyder (3-2) earned the win with seven strikeouts in five innings.
Clayborne went 4-for-4 and scored four runs in the second game to lead Bowie State. Four other Lady Bulldogs (Lewis, Washington, Smith and
Haley Snyder) had at least two hits. One of Smith's two hits was a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Bowie State University (11-7 overall, 9-1 CIAA, 4-0 North) will play their third doubleheader in three days, traveling to Baltimore (Md.) to take on Division I Morgan State University at 12 noon.
