Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Bowie State University men's basketball team is heating up just in time for the postseason by ending the season with an, 87-77, road victory against Elizabeth City State.
The victory sets the Bulldogs overall record at 12-13, 8-8 in the CIAA and 5-5 in the very important Northern Division, capping off the regular season with a three-game winning streak just in time for the 2013 CIAA Tournament which tips off Tuesday (2/26) in Charlotte.
Senior
Byron Westmoreland (Baltimore, Md.) was his usual dominant self, scoring a game-high 34 points to go along with six rebounds including shooting 75 percent from the free-throw line. Helping out in the winning effort was junior forward
Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md.), who finished the evening with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
In all, the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Vikings by a margin of 47-31 and dominated the glass all evening long.
Senior forward
Najee White (Jamaica Queens, N.Y.) also had a solid outing with 12 points and eight rebounds.
In fact, the Bulldogs shot 80 percent from the free throw in the second half and 77 percent for the game.
After a tight contest early on, the Viking opened an 18-13 lead with 12:47 remaining in the first half following a layup by junior forward Jaron Moore (Elizabeth City, N.C.).
Elizabeth City State (16-10, 9-7 CIAA, 7-3 North) took full control in the first half after a three-point field goal by A.J. Johnson (Holly Springs, N.C.) putting the Vikings up, 35-27, with 5:59 remaining in the first half.
But the Bulldogs would not back down and embarked on an, 18-6, run to close the first half and led, 45-41, heading into the half.
The Bulldogs took full control in the second half off of a dunk by senior forward
Dameatric Scott (Hagerstown, Md.) at the 14:09 mark of the second half that gave the Bulldogs a, 58-48, lead.
The Vikings battled back and briefly took a 70-69 lead, after a dunk by Deon Rice (Detroit, Mi.) with 4:52 left in the game.
Not rattled, the Bulldogs went on an, 8-0, run over nearly the next two minute to take a, 77-70, lead and never look back following a dunk by White.
With the win, Bowie State looks to be the fourth seed in the North when CIAA Tournament pairings are announced on Sunday.
