Branden Doughty's (Upper Marlboro, Md.) clutch offensive rebound and slam dunk with 23 seconds left helped Bowie State hang on to knock off Lincoln University (Pa.) 67-60 in the quarterfinals of the CIAA Tournament on Thursday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
The Bulldogs, the fourth seed from the North, advance to the semifinals of the CIAA Tournament where they will battle Winston-Salem State, the No. 2 seed in the South. That game will be played at 9 pm Friday.
Bowie State was paced by senior Byron Westmorland (Baltimore, Md.) with 18 points. Senior
Bryan Wilson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished with 13 points while junior
Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md.) and senior
Dameatric Scott (Hagerstown, Md.) each had 11 points.
“Tonight's game was a war with those guys, just like it was in the other two games,” said fourth-year Bowie State head coach
Darrell Brooks. “Anyone could have won the game and I'm proud of my guys for showing the physical toughness in key parts of that game down the stretch. That's what it takes to win games like these.”
Lincoln (Pa.), the No. 1 seed from the North, ends its season with 17-10 overall record. The Lions were led by Justin Jackson with 18 points. Derrick Washington added 17 points while George Jackson chimed in with 13 in the loss.
With the Bulldogs up 59-58, Bowie State's
Bryan Wilson headed to the free throw line, where he sank just 1-of-2. Wilson missed the second one, which fell into the arms of Doughty. After some ball movement, the ball came back to Doughty, who jammed it to make the score 62-58, which all but put the game out of reach for the Lions.
The Lions built an 8-4 lead early before Bowie State responded with a 10-1 run to build a 14-9 lead. With 13:09 remaining in the first half, Westmorland buried a jumper to give the Bulldogs the five-point advantage.
The Lions answered with a 6-0 spurt of their own to retake a 15-14 lead. During the run, Will Cole converted a layup to bring the Lions within three. Back-to-back layups from Washington gave the Lions the edge with 10:33 left in the period.
A jumper by Kenny Sharpe in the right corner lifted Lincoln to a 29-26 lead with 1:26 remaining in the frame, snapping a six-minute stretch without converting a field goal. Twenty-seconds later, the Bulldogs got within one when Westmorland buried a jump shot for the final points of the half as Lincoln held a 29-28 edge at halftime.
Justin Jackson fueled an 11-5 run to start the first three minutes of the second half. During the stretch, Justin Jackson scored nine of Lincoln's 11 points, helping the Lions get out a 40-31 lead with 16:50 remaining.
The Bulldogs answered with an 11-2 run to tie things up. Wilson's three-point play at the 12:08 mark made it 42 apiece. Wilson was fouled while hitting a layup. He buried the free throw to even things up.
A deep jumper from Justin Jackson gave the Lions a 44-42 cushion with 10:53 remaining in the game. Cole converted a layup inside to extend Lincoln's lead to four.
The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead. Westmorland dunked the ball to give Bowie State a 49-46 lead with 8:12 left in the contest. Bowie State started the run thanks to two free throws from senior
Najee White (Jamaica Queens, N.Y.), followed by a three-pointer from the right corner.
After George Jackson tied the game at 49 with a deep three-pointer, Bowie answered with four straight points to go up 53-49 with 4:46 on the clock. Twenty-nine seconds later, Washington brought Lincoln back within two as he buried a jumper to make it 53-51.
After Scott buried 1-of-2 at the charity stripe to make it a three-point game, Justin Jackson tied the game at 54 with a deep trey from the right wing at the 3:33 mark. Exactly one minute later, Westmorland converted a layup after receiving a nice pass from White underneath the basket, which gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead.
After a pair of free throws from Washington tied it at 56, Gatling gave the Bulldogs a three-point lead after getting fouled while converting a layup. He sank the free throw to give Bowie a 59-56 edge with 1:58 remaining.
Washington cut the Lincoln deficit to one with a nice reverse layup on the other end. On the ensuing possession, Wilson was fouled with 55 seconds remaining and hit 1-of-2 free throws.
After Wilson's miss on the second free throw, Doughty snagged down the offensive rebound before putting the game out of reach with his dunk, which made it 62-58. A free throw by Wilson made it a five-point cushion.
Washington sank two free throws to cut the deficit to three with 13 seconds left before Wilson sank two more free throws to push it back to five.
