SOFTBALL DROPS HOME OPENING DOUBLEHEADER TO N.Y. INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

BOWIE, Md. - The Lady Bulldogs softball team played their first home games of the season today but lost 15-3 and 15-2 to New York Institute of Technology.

Sophomore Cassandra Clayborne led Bowie State with three hits, which included a triple and two RBI over the twin bill. Juniors Aiyana McNair and Kiara Washington combined for three hits with McNair adding an RBI.

The visiting Bears scored the first run of the game one in the top of the 1st inning when Kristina Rozelle singled to right, scoring Shakiah Saltern who opened the game with a single.

Samantha Gallagher began the 3rd inning with a single and was pushed across the dish following an Adrianna Valencia double to take a 2-0 lead.

Bowie State (0-3) scored their first runs of the early season in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Sophomore Miranda Luna walked to start the inning and BSU's third batter, sophomore Alexis Barnes also received a free pass. Sophomore Cassandra Clayborne stepped to the plate and laced a triple, scoring Luna and Barnes. Junior Aiyana McNair followed with a single, scoring Clayborne and gave the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage.

Unfortunately, the Bears exploded for 10 runs in the top of the 4th inning on eight hits and were well on their way to claim victory.

New York Tech (2-0) added three more runs in the 5th inning to close out game one. The Bears recorded 16 hits in the opener and Monet Ormsby earned the pitching victory allowing just two hits and struck nine.

Clayborne and McNair recorded BSU's only two hits in game one. Junior Mariela Hernandez took the loss in the circle, walking seven.

The Bowie State offense continued to sputter in game two as the Lady Bulldogs fell into an 8-2 hole in the very first inning. The Lady Bulldogs duo of Clayborne and McNair reached on a bunt single and single respectively and crossed the plate for BSU's two opening inning runs.

New York Tech extended their lead to 13-2 in the top of the 2nd inning, banging out five hits. The Bears added another run in the 3rd inning and one more in the 5th to wrap-up the nightcap via the NCAA eight-run mercy rule.

The Lady Bulldogs committed four errors in game two but improved their hit total to four. Two of BSU's four hits came off the bat of Clayborne. Sophomore Hayley Flint suffered the loss in game two, giving up 18 hits.

Bowie State returns to action on Saturday (3/2), hosting West Chester University of Pennsylvania in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
