FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Bowie State University senior forward Byron Westmorland (Baltimore, Md.) was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Atlantic Region first team.
Westmorland was named to the 2012-2013 All-CIAA Team, 2013 CIAA All-Tournament Team and selected the MVP in the 2013 CIAA Championship game. Westmorland ranks second in CIAA scoring and seventh in NCAA Scoring Average (23.5 ppg). In terms of team stats, Westmorland leads the Bulldogs in total points (659), field goals made (203), 3-point field goals made (102), free throws made (151) and steals (42). He scored 30 or more points in six games this season, including a new career-high of 38 points in the conference championship.
West Liberty senior guard Alex Falk has been selected as the Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Falk, the WVIAC Player of the Year, leads the nation's top-ranked team into the NCAA Tournament this weekend with a 30-1 record.
Falk, a native of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, is averaging 20.8 points per game for the Hilltoppers. He also adds 4.2 rebounds and his 3.4 steals per game are fifth most in the NCAA. He was a first team all-region selection last year as well.
Falk is joined on the first team by Whis Grant (East Stroudsburg), Trevin Parks (Johnson C. Smith), Angelo Sharpless (Elizabeth City State) and Westmorland.
Whis Grant, the PSAC East Athlete of the Year as just a sophomore, helped his East Stroudsburg team to the NCAA Tournament after leading the Warriors with 17.3 points per game and 52 steals on the year. Parks, a second team all-region pick last year, is second in the country in scoring at 25 points per game. Sharpless averaged 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists for the Vikings. Westmorland, who was MVP of the CIAA Tournament after leading Bowie State to the title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament this week, was among the top 10 scorers in the country at 23.5 points per game to go with 6.1 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The second team consists of Cedric Harris (West Liberty), Luis Leao (Mercyhurst), Chad Moore (Shepherd), Nick Novak (Pitt-Johnstown), Devin Taylor (Slippery Rock), Isaac Thornton (Fairmont State) and Kelsey Williams (West Virginia Wesleyan).
