LADY BULLDOGS TOP LIVINGSTONE 13-8 IN CONFERENCE SOFTBALL

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. - A late inning rally was all Bowie State University needed to knock off Livingstone College 13-8 in conference softball action. The victory was Bowie State's second in a row and sets the Lady Bulldogs record at 2-0 in the CIAA (2-9 overall).

Livingstone's Lady Blue Bears plated four runs in the top of the 1st inning when Shaniqua Harrison doubled to left, scoring three. Harrison crossed the dish via a passed ball to take an early 4-0 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs responded with four in the bottom of the 1st inning with all nine batters getting a crack at Livingstone pitching. All four of BSU's opening inning runs were unearned. Sophomore Cassandra Clayborne and junior Aiyana McNair started the game with back-to-back bunt singles. Sophomore Kiara Washington reached on an error by Livingstone's center fielder and scored Clayborne, McNair and herself on the play. Freshman Erica Atkins drilled a double to left, advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 4-4.

Each team added a run in the 2nd inning to remain tied before Livingstone's Lareecia Swinney scored following a double by Alaja Pattio shifted the lead back over to the Lady Blue Bears.

Livingstone (3-5, 1-5 CIAA) increased their lead to 8-5 in the top of the 4th inning only to have Bowie State cut the deficit to 8-7 in their share of the inning.

After a scoreless 5th inning, the BSU Lady Bulldogs defense held the Lady Blue Bears scoreless in the top of the 6th inning, setting up the late game rally.

Trailing 8-7, Bowie State pounded out five hits and erupted for six runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take the lead for good at 13-8. The Lady Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate with McNair, senior Megan Alexander and junior Mariela Hernandez doing the biggest damage with doubles.

Hernandez (2-5) went to the pitching circle in the top of the 4th inning in relief of Alexander, to earn the victory.  Hernandez and Alexander combined for 11 strikeouts.

McNair and Clayborne led Bowie State with four and three hits respectively and Alexander accounted for a pair of hits. McNair recorded a season-high three RBI and Hernandez helped her own cause, adding two RBI.

The Lady Bulldogs close out the weekend with a 1 pm conference clash against Winston-Salem State University at Virginia Union's campus field.
