Bowie, Md. – The Bowie State University volleyball got off to a great start to their Sunday afternoon match against Chowan University, but the Lady Bulldogs dropped a four set decision to the Hawks. The Lady Bulldogs captured the first set by a score of 25-23. However, the Hawks rallied the troops to win the next three sets, 25-15, 28-18 and 25-9.
Chowan (12-3, 9-0, 6-0) was led by Suraya Chase with a match-high 10 kills on 29 attacks and added a pair of service aces and 10 digs. Three other Hawks (Princess Chauni Green, Morgan Spencer and Ashley Tutherow) recorded seven kills in the win.
Lindsey Denne dished out 19 assists over the course of the contest with Becca Page adding 16 assists. Cindy Ehrich tallied 16 digs as Chase added 10 to aid the effort.

Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) collected a team-high six kills in the contest followed by juniors
Jasmine Ashe and
Breiona Garrison, both of Baltimore, Md., and senior
Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) chipped in five kills apiece. Junior
Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md.) accounted for 18 assists while Ngundam was responsible for 17 digs.
In the first set, Bowie State took an early 4-2 lead, scoring three of the first four points off of Chowan miscues. With the score tied 5-5, a service ace and kill by Taylor for the Lady Bulldogs left Chowan trailing 7-5. Bowie State held onto the advantage until midway through the set when a kill by Denne knotted the score 15-15. The Hawks and Lady Bulldogs battled as the first set came down to the wire. With the score tied 22-22, back-to-back attack errors by the Hawks gave Bowie State a 24-22 advantage. A service error on the next play gave Chowan an additional point and the serve, but a Hawk service error secured the 25-23 win for Bowie State.
Set two was again an early battle for momentum. Trailing 10-9, Chowan took advantage of a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 advantage in the set. The Hawks held on to the lead for the remainder of set two and took advantage of a late 9-3 run to secure a 25-15 victory and even the match score 1-1.
Bowie State (5-16, 2-8, 0-7) took an early 3-0 lead in the third set using kills by Garrison and Ashe and a Hawk error. Trailing 6-3, the Hawks rallied to score eight unanswered points resulting in an 11-6 advantage. Chowan held onto the lead for the remainder of set three and secured the 25-18 win on a Lady Bulldog attack error.
The fourth and final set was all about the Hawks as Chowan held Bowie State to a mere nine points. The Hawks opened the set by scoring six straight points off of Page's serves. Holding a 12-7 lead, Chowan rolled to a 25-9 victory after closing out the set with a 13-2 run.
The Lady Bulldogs welcome the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University to the A.C. Jordan Arena on Monday (10/19) evening for a 7 pm CIAA Northern Division showdown.
