RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Union University made a statement early and cruised to a three-set victory over visiting Bowie State University on Monday night in Barco-Stevens Hall. Virginia Union won by scores of 25-6, 25-13 and 25-11, sweeping the season series against Bowie State.
Bowie State (7-22, 3-12 CIAA, 1-8 North) was led by senior
Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) with team-bests of four kills and 14 digs. The Lady Bulldogs trio of senior
Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) and juniors
Breiona Garrison (Baltimore, Md.) and
Jasmine Ashe (Baltimore, Md.) recorded three kills apiece. Harvey led the Lady Bulldogs with six assists and junior
Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md.) added four assists.
VUU's Lady Panthers jumped out to a 12-0 advantage in the first set before Bowie State's Garrison scored the first Lady Bulldogs point. Virginia Union continued to dominate the first set, holding the Lady Bulldogs to a negative attack percentage of .222 in the opener.
The Lady Bulldogs spotted the Lady Panthers a 4-0 lead in set two and pulled to within one three times (7-6, 9-8 and 10-9) before Virginia Union slowly pushed its lead to 14-10. From there, the Lady Panthers went on an 11-3 run to close out set two.
Set three started with a Martinez kill for Bowie State's first lead of the evening. However, Virginia Union answered with three straight points to take control of the final set. The Lady Bulldogs continued to battle but couldn't really get on track. Bowie State trailed 7-6 following an Ngundam service ace but went cold, allowing Virginia Union to push their lead to 11-6. VUU outscored BSU 14-5 to close out the third set.
Virginia Union (10-12, 8-6 CIAA, 5-3 North) was led by Ambryanna Moore with a half dozen kills to go along with three service aces and a pair of digs. Brittney Dobbins tallied five kills in the match and four other Lady Panthers recorded four kills each. Esha Atkins was one of those four and she added a match-high 19 assists while Fernanda Faustino led the Lady Panthers defense with 13 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to stop their current slide when they return to action on Thursday (November 5th), traveling to Wilmington (Del.) for a non-conference match against Goldey-Beacom College.
