WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Bowie State University volleyball team pulled off a thrilling five set victory over Johnson C. Smith University in the Lady Bulldogs' opening match of the CIAA Round-Up in Whitaker Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Golden Bulls by scores of 25-19, 11-25, 25-23, 19-25 and 15-11. With the win, Bowie State improves to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Seniors
Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) and
Alexis Fisher (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with a match-high 11 kills each. Ngundam was also credited with five service aces.
Junior
Amy Harvey (Laurel, Md.) tallied a match-high 21 assists and added five kills and four service aces for Bowie State while sophomore
Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) contributed five kills.
Defensively, redshirt senior
Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) ended the marathon match with 15 digs and redshirt junior
Alicia Grant (Edgewood, Md.) picked up nine kills for Bowie State.
Johnson C. Smith (0-7) was led by Makayla Adams on offense with 10 kills and added five digs and three block assists on defense. Salesse Stovall and Gracyn Doctor recorded seven kills each.
The Lady Bulldogs will continue day one of the round-up with a 6 pm match against Livingstone College.
