MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Bowie State University on Sunday afternoon. The loss was the third straight for Bowie State who falls to 4-11 on the season and drops to 2-3 in league play with the setback. With the win, Chowan improves to 7-3 overall and remains undefeated in CIAA play with a 5-0 record.
The Hawks took the first set 25-8, won set two 25-16 and captured the match win with a 25-18 victory in set three.
Lady Bulldogs senior
Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) led the effort for Bowie State with five kills in the setback while fellow senior
Alexis Fisher (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) and sophomore
Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) added three kills. Ngundam paced the Lady Bulldogs with a personal season-best 18 digs while senior
Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) tallied 11 digs for Bowie State.
Morgan Spencer paced the Hawks with 10 kills in the win while Suraya Chase added nine kills in the victory. Becca Page accounted for 21 assists while Lindsey Denne dished out 11 for the Blue and White. Cindy Ehrich grabbed 23 digs in the contest followed by Brianna Smith with 11 digs.
In the first set, the Hawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead using a kill by Michelle Seiler and taking advantage of Chase's service ace and a Lady Bulldog attack error. Chowan maintained a solid grip on the momentum and held the Lady Bulldogs to a mere eight points in the first set. The Hawks closed out set one with seven straight points behind Ehrich's serves and easily captured the 25-8 victory.
The Hawks refused to back down in set two, rolling to a 5-1 lead to set the tone for the contest. The Lady Bulldogs pulled within two points (5-3) before Chowan regained the momentum and responded with a 10-2 run to pull away 15-5. Chowan dominated the remainder of the set and took advantage of Bowie State errors and key kills by the Hawks to secure the 25-16 victory.
Chowan grabbed an early 7-0 advantage in set three, six of which were earned behind Brianna Smith's serves. The Hawks built their lead to as many as eight points (9-1) before the Lady Bulldogs rallied for a 10-7 run to pull within five points (16-11). Chowan regained their composure and used a 4-0 run late in the set before securing the 25-18 victory.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to snap a three-match losing streak when they return to action Monday (September 28th) at Elizabeth City State University. Match time in Elizabeth City State's R.L. Vaughan Center is 6 p.m.
