Bowie State Softball Swept 2-0 and 7-6 at Goldey-Beacom College

WILMINGTON, Del. – Bowie State University softball suffered two tough decisions to Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday (3/24) afternoon, falling 2-0 and 7-6. The losses drop the BSU Lady Bulldogs record to 8-14 overall.
 
Leading the Bowie State offense were freshman Jaelyn Belt (Glen Burnie, Md.) and sophomore Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) with four hits and two runs each respectively. Senior Caitlin O'Neill (Elkton, Md.) accounted for three hits while freshman Tiffany Bearns (Lusby, Md.) added a pair of hits in the non-conference doubleheader.
 
Goldey-Beacom (5-13) was led by Ryann Farley (Barnegat, N.J.) with four hits in six at bats and scored four runs. Shelby Murphy (Laurel, Md.) had two hits and tied for team-high RBI honors with two. Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, N.J.) and Charlee King (New Castle, Del.) recorded two hits each in the sweep.
 
The Lightning scored their first run of the opening contest in the bottom of the first inning on a Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, Calif.) double to left center scoring Farley. Farley opened the inning with a single to center.
 
Goldey-Beacom recorded their final run of game one in the bottom of the fifth inning by Farley who reached via a base on balls. Giampolo earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings and allowed five hits.
 
Ochoa recorded a team-high two hits in game one and took the loss in the circle, striking out three. Belt, O'Neill and Powell were responsible for one hit each in the setback. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs stranded five runners on base and committed two errors.
 
Bowie State held a 1-0 lead after two innings and increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning.
 
However, Goldey-Beacom responded with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at 4-all.
 
The Lady Bulldogs regained the advantage (5-40 in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a Belt triple down the right field line, scoring Ochoa. Ochoa reached base on a double to left center with two outs.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lightning regained the lead for good. Farley reached on a Bowie State error then stole second. Murphy stepped up and delivered a triple to deep center field, scoring Farley. King followed that with a single, scoring Murphy and gave Goldey-Beacom a 6-5 lead.
 
The Lightning tallied two hits added one run in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-6 lead.
 
Bowie State managed to plate one in the top of the seventh but would get no closer.
 
The Lady Bulldogs return home to host Davis and Elkins College on Tuesday, April 5th in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
