BOWIE, Md. – Visiting Virginia State University women's tennis handed Bowie State University a 7-2 setback on Friday afternoon spoiling the Lady Bulldogs' home finale.
Bowie State's (7-7, 5-6 CIAA, 2-4 North) to victories came via forfeit at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Virginia State's Sydney Yao (Alexandria, Va.) and Sheila James (San Bernadino, Calif.) topped BSU's
Amber Peters (Lanham, Md.) and
Sharaya Dunwell (Silver Spring, Md.) 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. The Trojans rolled to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles as Tamisha Richardson (Anguilla, British West Indies) beat the Bowie State duo of
Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) and
Madeleine Ndema (Lanham, Md.).
Peters played tough at No. 1 singles but was edged 8-5 by VSU's Yao. Dunwell her No. 2 singles match 8-2 to James and Johnson dropped an 8-1 decision to Richardson at No. 3 singles. Bowie State's Ndema played well at No. 4 singles but lost by a score of 8-6 to Thomas.
Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham, Md.) fell short at No. 5 singles, coming up on the short end by a score of 8-5 to Virginia State's Taylor.
With the 7-2 win, Virginia State improves to 10-3 overall, 10-3 in CIAA play and 6-2 in the North.
The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs will close out the regular season with doubleheader conference matches at Elizabeth City State University on Saturday (4/23).
