BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State Bulldogs are coming off a 64-31 win against CIAA Southern foe Fayetteville State Broncos last Saturday. The Bulldogs scored 64 points but committed three turnovers in the win. That is impressive for the Bulldogs, but Bowie State will have to cut down the turnovers as they enter Northern Division play.
The Bulldogs first Northern Division opponent will be the Chowan Hawks. The Hawks edged Johnson C. Smith 10-7 last weekend in Charlotte (N.C.). The Hawks enter this Saturday's contest with the number three passer in the conference in freshman quarterback Bryce Witt. Witt on the year has passed for 11 touchdowns, 1,090 yards while completing 54 percent of his passes. However, Witt has been intercepted seven times so far this year. The ball-hawking Bulldog defense have the ability to make things difficult for the freshman quarterback as they are ranked the number three defense in the nation. This will be an intriguing match-up to watch. Also on offense, the Hawks have the number two player in All-Purpose Yards in the conference in receiver Michael Offutt who averages 182.6 yards total a game.
On defense the Hawks possess one of the top defenders in the conference in defensive lineman Nate Wyche. According to the top CIAA blogger and one of the leading bloggers for Division II football Kris Ferguson, the red-shirt senior defensive lineman is the front runner for CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.
The Bulldogs have the top offensive line in the conference so this matchup will be a great one to witness. The Bulldogs take on the Chowan Hawks at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (10/7) at Bulldogs Stadium as this will be the third conference game for each team.
