Virginia State Claims 3-0 CIAA Northern Division Volleyball Sweep of Bowie State

BOWIE, Md. – The CIAA Northern Division leading Trojans of Virginia State University came into an electric Bowie State University A.C. Jordan Arena on Thursday evening and defeated the Bulldogs 25-19, 25-15 and 25-16.
 
As a team, Bowie State only managed 11 kills in the match of 59 attacks with sophomores Soljala Jones (Washington, D.C.) and Chelsea Beaudoin (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallying three each on a combined 25 attacks. Freshman Madison Marshall (Albany, N.Y.) was the only other Bulldogs player with multiple kills, knocking down a pair on six attacks. Beaudoin paced Bowie State on defense with a team-high eight digs while Marshall and senior Kilana Jenkins (Bridgeport, Conn.) contributed five digs apiece in the loss. Sophomore Bianca Tucker (Edgewood, Md.) recorded all 11 set assists for the Bulldogs.
 
Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, Md.) was a beast at the net for Virginia State racking up a match-high 11 kills on 18 attacks to go along with one assist, one service ace and a half dozen digs. Tiara Ramey (Harlem, Ga.) chipped in six kills in the match and added two assists, five service aces and a match-high nine digs for the Trojans.
 
Bowie State (1-11, 0-11 CIAA, 0-5 North) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to open set one but the division leading Trojans of Virginia State rallied back to tie the set at 15-all and took their first lead at 16-15 following a vicious kill by Ramey and never looked back in the opening set.
 
Virginia State (15-8, 9-3 CIAA, 4-1 North) came out strong in set two, taking an early 5-1 advantage that forced Bowie State to call a timeout. The Trojans lead stretched to 9-2 before BSU's Beaudoin stopped the run with a strong kill at the net. However, the visitors went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 14-3. The Bulldogs used a 7-5 run to close the deficit to 19-8 but the Trojans maintained the momentum to secure the 25-15 victory in set two.
 
Set #3 was close early until Virginia State broke an 8-all tie with a 5-1 burst. Bowie State answered with 3-1 run to close the gap to 14-12. The Trojans responded back with a 5-0 run and never threated for the duration of the match.
 
Bowie State will be back in action on Sunday (October 7th) taking on Chowan University on the Hawks' home court tat 1 p.m. in the Helms Center.
