BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State volleyball played with a lot of intensity on Thursday night against Virginia State, but the Bulldogs fall in straight sets by scores of 20-25, 8-25 and 19-25. The loss sets Bowie State's season mark at 3-13 overall, 1-7 in CIAA play and 1-3 in the North.

The win by Virginia State set the Trojans season record at 9-7 overall, 6-1 against CIAA teams and 3-0 in the North.
With Virginia State leading 13-12 in the first set, the visiting Trojans used a 6-0 burst to get a little breathing and went on to secure a 25-20 victory in the opening set.
The second set saw the Bulldogs take a 3-1 advantage only to have the Trojans go on an 8-0 run and never looked back, cruising to an easy 25-8 win to take a 2-0 set advantage.
The Bulldogs and Trojans really battled in set three with Bowie State holding a 9-5 advantage at one point forcing Virginia State to call a timeout. Bowie State maintained its strong play and held a 16-12 advantage forcing the Trojans to call another timeout. Following VSU's second timeout, the Trojans erupted on an 8-0 run to take control of the final set. Bowie State was able to close the deficit to 22-19 but Virginia State was just too strong down the stretch and went on to close out the match with 25-19 victory in the final set.
For the match, Virginia State collected 39 kills compared to 20 for Bowie State. The Trojans held advantages in assists (38-18) and digs (43-28) but each time tallied 87 attacks each.
Bowie State was led by
Chelsea Beaudoin (Upper Marlboro, Md.) with five kills, with
Bianca Tucker (Edgewood, Md.) dishing out 17 of the Bulldogs' 18 assists and
Neysha Washington (Winchester, Va.) finished the night with 10 digs.
Jailyn Ivey led Virginia State with 13 kills while Bria Anderson along with Emma Quarles contributed 18 and 15 assists and the Trojans tandem of Ivey and Alexis Baker recorded double-digit dogs with 13 and 12 respectively.
The Bulldogs will have little time to rest before returning to action tomorrow (October 18), hosting Elizabeth City State at 6 p.m. in the Leonidas S. James Complex (A.C. Jordan Arena).
