BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University (5-15 overall / 3-9 CIAA) gave a good effort, but lost twice at CIAA Volleyball Round-Up #2 hosted by the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs fell to Southern Division opponents Johnson C. Smith University and Shaw University by 3-0 scores but captured a 3-0 victory over Saint Augustine's University.
Junior
Chelsea Beaudoin (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied a team-high 17 kills over the three matches and picked up 21 digs. Fellow junior
Soljala Jones (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore
Madison Marshall (Albany, N.Y.) recorded 13 kills each while junior
Alana Matson (Baltimore, Md.) along with senior
Shalom Omo-Osagie (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 12 and 10 kills respectively over nine matches played.
Juniors
Bianca Tucker (Edgewood, Md.) and
Oladia Menchaca (Landover, Md.) contributed 38 and 27 kills respectively for the Bulldogs. Freshman
Neysha Washington (Winchester, Va.) led Bowie State in digs over the weekend, picking up 63.
In Saturday's (10/19) opening match against Johnson C. Smith, Marshall led the Bulldogs with eight kills and added a pair of digs and an assist. Jones and Beaudoin had eight kills apiece in Bowie State's 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18 loss to the Golden Bulls. Washington, Marshall and sophomore Karen Diaz-Avilez (Washington, D.C.) led the Bulldogs on defense with 28, 25 and 10 digs respectively.
In Bowie State's second match on Saturday versus Saint Augustine's, Omo-Osagie along with junior
Caitland Okorafor (Hyattsville, Md.) were BSU's leaders on offense with six kills each on a combined 31 attacks. Washington was the teams' leader on defense with 24 digs to go along with two kills and one service ace. The Bulldogs earned a 3-0 sweep of the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons, winning by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-14.
The Bulldogs lost it final match of the Round-Up weekend to the defending CIAA Champions of Shaw University, falling 25-9, 25-5 and 25-15 to the Lady Bears on Sunday. Bowie State struggled offensively, finishing the match with a negative attack percentage of .047. BSU had just 13 kills on 107 attacks and committed 18 attack errors.
Beaudoin accounted for four kills in the match to go along with six digs while Jones and Okorafor were responsible for three and two kills respectively in the loss.
The Bulldogs return to the court on Sunday (October 27) as Bowie State visits Elizabeth City State for a 6 p.m. divisional match against the Lady Vikings.
