ACKWORTH, Ga. - Bowie State softball lost a pair of games on the final day of the HBCU D-II Tournament, falling to Kentucky State by a score of 10-2 and dropped a 14-6 decision to Fort Valley State in the Bulldogs final game of the weekend.

Senior
Tiffany Bearns led the Bulldogs with three hits in five at bats on Sunday and accounted for two runs over the two-game set. Freshmen
Kristina Hawke along with
Amya Ferguson tallied two hits each in the setbacks. Of Ferguson's two hits they were both doubles. Senior
Morgan Powell accounted for three RBI and Hawke was responsible for a pair of RBI.

In game one on a very cold morning, Kentucky State plated five in the 1st inning and added a run each in the 2nd and 3rd innings to take a 5-0 advantage before Bowie State got on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th inning. Powell laced a single up the middle of the Thorobreds defense, scoring Bearns and freshman
Sierra Sims to trim the Bulldogs deficit to 5-2.

Kentucky State answered with three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to extend its lead to 10-2. The Thorobreds sent the Bulldogs down in order in the top of the 5th inning to close out the game by way of the 8-run mercy rule.

The Bulldogs started strong in the second game of the day against Fort Valley State, scoring four in the top of the 1st inning on two hits but stranded three.

The Fort Valley State Wildcats got three runs back in the bottom of the 2nd inning, by way of a solo home run by Keteria Loney and a two-run blast by Audrianna Noel to cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-3.

Freshman
Shanya Gordon stroked a single through the right side that scored fellow freshman
Brooke Ware and a Ferguson double to center pushed Gordon across the dish to shift the advantage back over to Bowie State at 6-3 in the top of the 3rd inning.

Fort Valley State responded with eight runs on seven hits, which included a two run homer and a pair of three run homers to put the Wildcats back on top 11-6 after three innings of play. The Wildcats defense held the Bulldogs scoreless in BSU's next two at bats and tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to earn the 8-run mercy rule victory by a final count of 14-6. Fort Valley State pounded out 17 hits compared to eight for Bowie State.

Bowie State (0-4) will make its home debut on Friday (February 22) hosting West Chester University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
