ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Bowie State softball closed out the CIAA Round-Up on Sunday (3/17) afternoon with losses to Johnson C. Smith (7-5) and Fayetteville State (13-1). The setbacks put the Bulldogs record at 3-8 overall and 3-4 in league play.
As a team, Bowie State tallied 11 hits while their opponents accounted for 24 hits over two games.
In Sunday's game one versus Johnson C. Smith, freshman
Sierra Sims (Ormond Beach, Fla.) paced Bowie State with three hits while senior
Tiffany Bearns (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman
Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, Md.) added a pair of hits each. One of Bearns' hits was a homerun. The other two hits in the game came off the bats of junior
Jaelyn Belt (Glen Burnie, Md.) and sophomore
Aseyah Alexander (Silver Spring, Md.).
Senior
Morgan Powell (Upper Marlboro, Md.) pitched all seven innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) and walked four.
Fayetteville State jumped on Bowie State early, scoring runs in the first four innings before the Bulldogs were able to score via a solo home run by Bearns in the bottom of the 4th inning. The Broncos pounded out 17 hits in the contest compared to just two for Bowie State. Alexander provided the only other hit for the Bulldogs.
Bowie State returns to action Tuesday (3/19) in a non-conference doubleheader at Millersville (Pa.) University at 2 and 4 p.m.
