WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bowie State University softball took on Division I Howard University on Wednesday night at the Nationals Youth Academy and lost 15-2 to the Bison in a non-conference contest.
Bowie State (4-16) managed just two hits with those coming off the bats of freshmen
Kristina Hawke (New Castle, De.) and
Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, Md.).
Howard lit up the scoreboard first, pushing seven runs across the dish on just three hits in the bottom of the 1st inning and never looked back.
The Bison added two more to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd inning and added another five runs in their share of the 3rd inning to expand its lead to 14.0.
Amya Ferguson (Orange, Va.) was the first base runner for the Bulldogs, reaching via a walk to start the 4th inning. Hawke broke up the no-hitter with a single to center and Gordon followed with a bunt single advancing Ferguson to third. Ferguson scored on a wild pitch and Hawke crossed the plate as well, but Bowie State trailed 14-2.
Howard (10-18) added one final run in the bottom of the 4th and ended the contest at 15-2 in the 5th inning by way of the 8-run mercy rule.
Kalita Dennis, Camille Navarro and Shanya Swanson paced Howard's Bison with three hits each in the win. Tracey Mosley earned the win the circle, striking out six and faced only 15 batters.
Bowie State will return to conference action on Saturday (April 6) hosting the Lady Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University in a doubleheader at Jericho Park beginning at 1 p.m.
