Frostburg State Defeats Bowie State Volleyball 3-0

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg volleyball team opened their own 2019 FSU Tournament with a dominating 3-0 shutout of Bowie State, Friday night.
 
In a battle of the only Division II volleyball programs in the state of Maryland, Frostburg State had no problem improving its record to 3-0 on the season after cruising past the Bulldogs (1-2) by scores of 25-8, 25-16 and 25-9.
 
The Bulldogs tallied 84 attacks in the match but managed only 18 kills. Soljala Jones was responsible for five of those kills on 15 attacks to lead Bowie State. The Bulldogs foursome of Alana Matson, Shalom Omo-Osagie, Chelsea Beaudoin and Madison Marshall recorded three kills each on a combined 54 attacks.
 
FSU hit .321 against Bowie State with 33 kills to just eight errors. Frostburg State also collected nine service aces and 45 digs. Haley Altemus hit .643 with nine kills to pace Frostburg's attack. Biamba Tshitenge and Raven Pratt each finished with seven kills. Edwyna Lainez recorded 17 assists as well as four service aces and Kathryn Lough tallied 16 digs for the Bobcats. 
 
Frostburg State rolled on Friday night in set one behind 10 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. The Bobcats closed out the set with an impressive 16-1 run. 
 
The second set began with back and forth play before Frostburg State went on a five-point run to take a 13-7 lead in the set. Bowie State continued to fight back but two services aces from Tshitenge and Lainez closed out the set for the Bobcats.   
 
In the third set Frostburg State recorded a remarkable .400 hitting percentage behind 12 kills. An 11-2 run in the middle of the set put the Bobcats in front 18-6. A kill from senior Bailey Godlove closed out the set and gave FSU the win.  
 
The Bulldogs will close out the weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday (9/14), taking on the University of the Sciences at 1 p.m. followed by Alderson Broaddus at 3 p.m.
