BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State volleyball nearly extended the match in the third, but in the end it was Elizabeth City State who took a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) win over the Bulldogs in the annual Dig Pink match Thursday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The loss dips Bowie State to 3-15 overall and 2-9 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) while the Lady Vikings improve to 22-3 and 7-1 in the league.
The Bulldogs trailed early on as ECSU picked up a the 25-19 win despite three kills apiece from senior Oladia Menchaca (Landover, MD) and junior Lydia Leiner (Sykesville, MD). The second started back-and-forth until a quick burst by the Lady Vikings forced the Bulldogs to call a timeout at 21-17. ECSU threw down four-straight that to take a 2-0 lead over Bowie State.
In the third set, BSU trailed by as many as nine points before using a 9-3 run to pull within three (21-17) on a ECSU miscue but that would be the last of the Bulldogs offensively as the Lady Vikings scored four unanswered points including three-straight errors committed by BSU to take the set win and 3-0 sweep.
Leiner led the way with a match-high eight kills and 12 digs on the night while freshman Regan Amos (Reisterstown, MD) added 12 assists. Sophomore Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) recorded a match-high 17 digs.
The Bulldogs will return to action at Lincoln (PA) on Monday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
