SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV – Despite a team-high 18-point performance from senior Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, MD), the Bowie State women's basketball team (0-2) lost 74-56 to Shepherd (3-0) on the road Wednesday night at the Butcher Athletics Center.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered points before the Rams used a 11-2 run to take a 11-6 lead with 3:46 left. Bowie State would trail 21-13 after SU held a 10-7 scoring frame going into the second quarter.
BSU hit a wall offensively in the first three minutes of the second stanza as the Rams ballooned a lead as large as 21 points twice on 53-percent (11-16) shooting while the Bulldogs accounted for 21-percent (3-14) from the field trailing 44-23 at the break.
Although the Bulldogs held a 20-17 scoring advantage in the third quarter, Bowie State came from behind (61-43) in the fourth quarter to pull within 16 points after a layup from Hutton but Shepherd would not relinquish on the lead in route for the win over the Bulldogs.
Joining Hutton in double figures was freshman Anii Harris (Ellicott City, MD) with 11 points off the bench while freshman Saniha Jackson (River Hill, MD) added seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
For the contest, the Bulldogs shot 34-percent from the field, 20-percent from the 3-point line and 55-percent from the free throw line. As for Shepherd, the Rams was 30-for-57 (53-percent) in field goals, 6-of-19 (32-percent) from behind the arc and connected 8-of-10 from the charity strip at 80-percent.
Bowie State will return to action Sunday, Nov. 21 in their home opener against Wilmington (DE) at 6 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
