NCAA Playoffs Round 2: #10 Bowie State to Host Newberry Saturday

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State football (11-1) will host a second round NCAA DII Playoff game against Newberry College (10-1) on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. from Bulldogs Stadium.  The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on Dec. 4.

Tickets are available online. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for students with proper identification. Children under 12 are free. Bowie State University Athletics is requiring all fans to show proof of vaccination along with proper ID. Cash ticket sales will be sold at 11 a.m. at the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
 
COVID-19 Spectator Policy
Bowie State Athletics is requiring all fans and spectators to show proof of vaccination along with proper identification before entering the stadium. Seating will be made available to Bowie State University students, faculty, and staff, home and visiting team guests. All fans seated in designated areas must wear face coverings (masks or neck gaiters) at all times unless eating or drinking.

The Game
Saturday's game marks the second meeting in program history between Bowie State and Newberry. The first meeting occurred back in 2007 when the Bulldogs suffered a 41-7 setback in Newberry, S.C. The Bulldogs ride a 12-game win-streak heading into Saturday's contest while the Wolves have won the last seven games.
 
The #10 Bulldogs
#10 Bowie State has not lost a game at home this season with a perfect 5-0 record at Bulldogs Stadium. Last time out, BSU defeated Lenoir-Rhyne, 31-10 during the first round of the NCAA DII playoffs last weekend. Senior Ja'rome Johnson (Washington, D.C.) registered 147-yards rushing on 12 carries and a pair of scores while he completed eight passes for 76-yards. Senior Calil Wilkins (Temple Hills, MD) recorded 101-rushing yards on 23 carries and a touchdown while graduate senior Myles Wolfolk (Largo, MD) garnered nine tackles and a block. Both redshirt sophomore Jonathan Ross (Waldorf, MD) and graduate senior Simeon Gatling (Greensboro, NC) grabbed eight tackles each with Ross registering 1.5 sack for 15-yards.
The Bulldogs average 35 points per game with 4,438 total yards of offense. BSU's opponents have been limited to 13 points per outing thanks to one of the nation's best defense. Bowie State has a total of eight defensive touchdowns (leads DII), third down conversion percentage defense (.239) (1st in DII), third in fumbles recovered (18), fourth in turnovers gained (31), fifth in total defense (3.79 yards per play) and seventh in total team sacks (44).
 
Scouting Newberry
A member of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), the Wolves punched in their ticket to the second of playoffs with a 33-30 overtime over No. 3 West Florida last Saturday. Newberry took a 14-3 lead in the first quarter before the Argos scored 21 points in the second and third to lead 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter. The Wolves tacked on a 19-6 scoring margin to take the win.
 
The Wolves average 30 points per game while holding their opponents to 17. Mario Anderson has 1,158 rushing yards on 214 carries and 11 touchdowns while Dre Harris completed 159 passes for 2,272 yards and 18 touchdowns. At the receiver position, Bryson Woodruff has scored nine touchdowns for 893 yards on a total of 60 catches. AJ Valentine has a team-best 56 tackles, including 30 solo, six tackle for loss, 2.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.
