Bulldogs Snap Losing Skid, Captures First Win of Season at UDC, 80-65

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bowie State men's basketball team (1-6) captured their first win of the season with a convincing 80-65 road victory over the University of the District of Columbia (1-7) Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a six game losing skid for the Bulldogs who started off the year 0-6.

Three Bulldogs posted double figures in scoring led by sophomore David McCullough (Bowie, MD) with 11 points, followed by graduate senior Godlyvictor Okafor (Greenbelt, MD) with 11 points to go along with five rebounds as senior Dexter Turner (Washington, D.C.) turned in 10 points shooting perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the 3-pont line. McCullough aided four rebounds a pair of steals and a block while Okafor grabbed five boards and four assists.

Although Bowie State got off to a slow start, the Bulldogs erased a nine-point deficit after producing a 12-2 run and taking the lead 19-18 after junior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) sunk two free throws at the 5:27 mark. From there, BSU scored eight unanswered points to extend their lead 25-18 before UDC snapped their scoring drought with a layup from David Buriss with 1:37 left in the first half. The Bulldogs used a 5-0 run in route to a 10-point (30-10) command at the break.

In the second half, Bowie State picked up where they left off – netting four-straight free throws to extend their lead 34-20 in the first minute. The Bulldogs maintained control the entire half and eventually ballooned their largest lead of the game at 22 points on a layup from Okafor with 6:30 left in regulation. The closest UDC would get to BSU was 15 points for the remainder of the contest as Bowie State rolled to the road win.

Bowie State shot 60-percent in the second half, including 6-of-10 from the 3-point line and 62-percent from the free throw line (8-13). The Bulldogs scored 24 points off of turnovers, holding a 11-2 ratio in second chance opportunities as their bench dominated scoring 36 points compared to the Firebirds two points.

BSU will remain on the road on Wednesday, Dec. 8 when the Bulldogs travel to Kutztown, Pa. to face Kutztown. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
