Bowie State Names Dr. Sean T. Coleman Faculty Athletics Representative

BOWIE, Md. – The Department of Athletics at Bowie State University announced the appointment of Dr. Sean T. Coleman, Associate Professor in BSU's Educational Studies and Leadership, as the new Faculty Athletics Representative.
Dr. Coleman began his duties as the university's FAR beginning June 11, and will serve as the liaison between athletics and academics while representing BSU in conferences and NCAA affairs. As an Associate Professor in BSU's Educational Studies and Leadership, Dr. Coleman teaches courses related to social justice, statistics, and research methods. Additionally, he has served as a coordinator for the Research Institute for Scholars in Education Program; a founding faculty fellow with the Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers; s founding committee member for the Social Justice Alliance; and former director of the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership.
 
"I am very honored, privileged, and excited to serve as the new BSU Bulldog FAR," said Dr. Coleman. "In this role, I look forward to the continued building of relationships with student-athlete success stakeholders and joining the team that facilitates students' full and rich educational experiences. As we continue to navigate the coronavirus pandemic as a community, I look forward to supporting the mindfulness of safe practices in these times and in student-athletes' training and development."
 
His work as an educational leader and research psychologist involves conference presentations, peer review publications, and program evaluation on best practices to enhance cognition and learning and social-emotional development with cultural, race and ethnicity considerations. Much of his research contexts include connecting multiple factors for school success using integrity and asset-based practices to engage students' learning, school climate, and effective leadership.
 
During the 2020-21 academic year, Dr. Coleman received BSU's President's Distinguished Achievement in Research and Grants Award, a College of Education Faculty Research Award, and a Research Mentor Award from the Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers. Dr. Coleman completed his undergraduate education at the University of Maryland at College Park. He earned both his Master of Education in curriculum and instruction and Doctor of Philosophy in psychology degrees from Howard University.
