BOWIE, Md. -- Bowie State University Athletics has announced the hiring of Derric West as its new Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations, bringing an experienced athletics administrator back to the university with nearly a decade of progressive NCAA Division I and Division II experience.
"We are thrilled to welcome Derric West back to Bowie State University and into this important leadership role within athletics," added
Dr. Jolisa Williams, Interim Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. "Derric brings a strong understanding of our institution, our department, and the standards required to operate a championship-caliber athletics program. His experience, institutional knowledge, and commitment to student-athlete success will be tremendous assets as we continue to strengthen our internal operations and position Bowie State Athletics for sustained success. We look forward to the immediate impact he will make on our department."
West returns to Bowie State after previously serving as the university's Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance from December 2022 through October 2024. During his previous tenure, he provided leadership and oversight of the Bulldogs' NCAA Division II compliance operations while contributing to the administration of a then 13-sport athletics program. He also served as sport administrator for indoor and outdoor track and field, women's bowling and women's tennis, overseeing budgets, travel and day-to-day operational coordination for those programs.
In his new role, West will be responsible for supporting the internal operations of Bowie State Athletics and helping advance the department's strategic goals. His extensive background in athletics administration, compliance, sport supervision, facility and event operations, budget management and student-athlete development positions him to play an important role in strengthening the department's infrastructure and supporting its coaches, staff and student-athletes."I'm really excited about returning to the Bowie State family," added West. "The department is going through an exciting transformation, and the momentum can be felt throughout the BSU community. The future is bright and I'm looking forward to being part of the new era of Bowie State athletics."
Most recently, West served as Director of Athletic Compliance at the University of Southern California, a position he held beginning in October 2024. At USC, West led NCAA Division I compliance operations for assigned sports while working within the Big Ten and institutional standards. His responsibilities included budget planning, NCAA and conference legislation, risk management, rules education, policy implementation and long-range strategic planning. He also worked closely with departments across the university to integrate athletics compliance with academic, financial and athletic operations. West's career also includes more than six years at California State University, Fullerton, where he progressed through several positions before serving as Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Facility Event Management. At Cal State Fullerton, he directed Division I compliance operations while overseeing facilities, event management and facility rentals for 16 varsity programs. He supervised facility managers, served as sport supervisor for women's soccer and managed a $4 million athletics grant-in-aid and financial aid budget. His responsibilities required him to balance fiscal management, NCAA compliance, student-athlete services and day-to-day athletics operations.
Earlier in his career, West served as a Compliance Specialist and Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Cal State Fullerton, where he handled NCAA rules education, investigations, self-reports, waivers, recruiting oversight, eligibility and compliance monitoring. He began his NCAA administrative career as a Compliance Assistant at Lafayette College, managing eligibility certification and recruiting oversight while advising coaches on NCAA and Patriot League regulations. West holds a Master of Science in Sport Business from Temple University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He has also completed professional development through NCAA regional rules seminars, NAAC professional development programs, the NCAA Division II/NAAC Professional Development Workshop, the Big West Conference Compliance Summit, the SoCal Compliance Summit and the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program. With experience spanning compliance, operations, budget and finance, sport administration, facilities, risk management and student-athlete development, West returns to Bowie State prepared to help guide the department's internal operations into its next chapter. His appointment adds an experienced and familiar leader to the Bulldogs' athletics administration as Bowie State continues its commitment to institutional integrity, operational excellence and the overall development of its student-athletes.
