WILMINGTON, DE – The Bowie State University volleyball team suffered two setbacks in straight sets to Goldey-Beacom and West Chester (PA) in a tri-match Saturday afternoon inside the Jones Center.
The losses dip Bowie State to 1-4 overall while GBC improved to 4-7 and West Chester (PA) improved to 5-3 overall.
Junior Madison Marshall (Albany, NY) led the way in the opening match with five kills aided by senior Bianca Tucker (Edgewood, MD) with 12 assists. Defensively, sophomore Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) recorded 14 digs.
Despite improving their score in each set, the Bulldogs fell 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-14) to the Lightning.
In the first set, GBC owned seven aces and four blocks while in the second and third set the Bulldogs struggled to find their groove offensively as BSU was outscored 17-8 in the second stanza 13-3 in third frame for total kills. For the match, BSU ended with 14 kills on -.034 hitting percentage while GBC finished with 36 kills on a .287 hitting percentage.
In the second match, Bowie State also fell 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-10). Junior Noel Snow (Mount Airy, MD) finished with four kills while Tucker added nine assists. Washington also posted a team-high eight digs to lead the Bulldogs, defensively.
West Chester (PA) outscored BSU in kills 13-3 in the first set, 10-3 in the second frame, and 8-4 in the third set. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs offensive woes continued to plague them against the Golden Rams as BSU was held to a negative hitting percentage value in each set.
For the match, BSU finished with just 10 kills while West Chester finished with 31 kills.
Bowie State will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 23 for a home match against Virginia State in a conference match-up slated for 6 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
