KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Bowie State University volleyball team endured two setbacks, falling in straight sets to Kutztown University and Frostburg State University in a tri-match Saturday afternoon inside the Keystone Arena.
The losses dip the Bulldogs to 1-7 overall in the season while KU improves to 4-7 and FBSU improved to 2-9 overall.
During the first and second sets, the Bulldogs stayed within a two-point margin with the Golden Bears until midway, but KU was able to break away in both sets with five straight kills in the first stanza, and three straight kills and an attack error in the second which led to BSU trailing 0-2 (15-25, 14-25) within the match.
Despite having more attacks in the third set, the Golden Bears held the Bulldogs to a negative hitting percentage with a 7-5 ratio in kills which allowed Kutztown to take a 3-0 win for the match with a 25-14 set win.
Junior Madison Marshall (Albany, NY) turned in a team-high five kills aided by senior Bianca Tucker (Edgewood, MD) with 12 assists. On the defensive side sophomore Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) dished out a team high of 15 digs – a season high. BSU finished with 23 kills while KU tallied 38 kills.
The Bulldogs fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-12) in the second match to the Bobcats of Frostburg State. Freshman Cydney Dawson (Cortlandt Manor, NY) led the way with six kills, followed by Tucker with eight assists and Washington who matched her season-high earlier with 15 digs for the second consecutive time.
FBSU tied with BSU in kills 7-7 in the first set. From there, the Bulldogs were outscored in kills 16-6 in the second set, and 11-5 in the third frame. Bowie State's offensive woes continued throughout the day as the Bulldogs were held to a negative hitting percentage value in two out of the three sets.
BSU finished the match with 18 total kills while Frostburg State registered 34 kills.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Monday, Sept. 27 as they resume Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference play at Elizabeth City State University. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
