Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Bowie State women's basketball held a balance attack against the Lady Bears of Shaw University that held SU on edge for most of the contest. However, the Lady Bears went on a 17-15 in the final 10 minutes to overtake the Bulldogs and pull away for a 62-53 win.
The loss dips the Bulldogs (5-8, 3-3 CIAA) to 1-2 in the Northern Division while Shaw (7-9, 4-3 CIAA) now stands 2-1 in the division.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman Katerra Myers (Burtonsville, MD) and sophomore Robyn Howard (Temple Hills, MD) with 13 points apiece while Myers grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Jazmine Washington (Columbia, MD) added 11 points off the bench while freshman Saniha Jackson (Ellicott City, MD) also tied with Myers for a team-high in rebounds at eight.
Bowie State trailed 14-13 after one quarter but managed to outscore the Lady Bears 15-14 in the second quarter with the score being tied at 28-even at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bears took a six-point lead on a 10-4 run and would close out the stanza with a seven-point advantage after a pair of free throws from Makayla Sutton in the final seconds.
Facing a nine-point deficit in the fourth, the Bulldogs pulled within six when BSU put together a 7-4 spurt capped off by a 3-pointer from junior Drew Calhoun (New Carrollton, MD) at the 6:58 mark but the Lady Bears held a 11-8 scoring frame in the final six minutes of regulation.
Both teams were evenly matched statistically but the Lady Bears outscored Bowie State 26-8 in the paint, shooting 41-percent from the field compared to the Bulldogs' 31-percent and a 42-34 ratio on the glass.
Bowie State will have a quick turnaround and will look ahead as the Bulldogs will face Saint Augustine's Sunday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m. in Emery Gymnasium.
