CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Bowie State men's basketball team got a 68-point performance from the bench on the way to a 68-66 victory over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls on the road Saturday in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action. The win improved the Bulldogs to 4-9 overall and 2-0 in league play while the Golden Bulls dip to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in CIAA competition.
Led by Mark Bradshaw's 15 points, freshman Christian Niles (Annapolis, MD) also tacked on 10 points off of the bench and freshman Amare Wimbush (Landover, MD) added six points and six rebounds. Wimbush's three offensive rebounds helped aid the Bulldogs on the offensive glass as BSU combined for 13 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
The Bowie State defense held Johnson C. Smith shooters to just 37-percent from the field.
How It Happened
Bowie State fell behind early, resulting in a 30-25 disadvantage at the half. In the second half, the Bulldogs narrowed its deficit to 66-62 before going on a 6-0 run to seize a 68-66 lead with nine seconds to go in the contest.
BSU held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 68-66 win. Bowie State capitalized on 11 Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the half, collecting 14 points off those turnovers.
