Bulldogs Win-Streak Snapped at Virginia State

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Bowie State softball team's six-game winning streak was snapped by Virginia State Sunday afternoon at the VSU Softball Field. The Bulldogs surrendered an 8-3 decision in game one and a 8-0 decision in game two.

The losses are the Bulldogs (14-16-1, 7-5 CIAA) first setbacks in division play, falling to 4-2 overall while VSU (17-9, 11-3 CIAA) remains atop in the North with a 6-2 mark.

Game one was highlighted by freshman Brittany Brewer's (Savage, MD) first home run of the season to lead BSU offensively. The Bulldogs held a 3-1 lead until the bottom fifth when the Trojans scored six runs, followed by a run in the sixth. Junior Akirra Pullen (Baltimore, MD) took the loss, allowing eight hits, striking out four and walking one batter in 4.1 innings pitched. The Bulldogs tallied six hits with both graduate senior Aseyah Alexander (Silver Springs, MD) and freshman Saniya Jones (Louisa, VA) both going 2-for-3 and scoring one run apiece.

In game two, Bowie State's offense plagued, as the Bulldogs did not score, combining for just two hits as a team. Virginia State tacked on a run in the second, four runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth for the five-rule. Freshman Lindsey George (Fayetteville, GA) suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits, walking and striking out one.

Bowie State will return to action Wednesday, Apr. 12 with a home non-conference doubleheader versus Shippensburg. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
