GLEN ALLEN, Va. – The No. 3 seeded Bowie State softball team's championship quest is still alive after splitting the semifinal Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell to No. 2 Virginia State, 10-5, falling into the loser's bracket but was able to bounce back with a 11-4 win over No. 4 Winston-Salem State in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Semifinal games at the RF&P Park.
The Bulldogs (24-19-1) will meet Virginia State for the fourth time this season with a trip to the championship game on the line at 11 a.m.
Game 1: Bowie State 5, Virginia State 10
The Trojans jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run single by Alaijah Pratt followed by a two-run double from Nia Hall.
Bowie State would rally in the top of the fourth with five runs, including a two-run triple by graduate senior Aseyah Alexander (Silver Spring, MD), to make it a 7-5 game. In the bottom of the fourth, a two-run homer by Pratt would give VSU a 9-4 lead.
VSU added another score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to give the Trojans a 10-5 lead.
Alexander led BSU with two hits and two RBIs while six other Bulldogs registered a hit.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs into the loser's bracket as BSU would face Winston-Salem State in an elimination game.
Game 2: Bowie State 11, Winston-Salem State 4
The Bulldogs took advantage of three of WSSU errors to take the 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Turnabout was fair play in the top of the fourth inning as the Rams pushed three errors, all on the same play, which enabled three runs to cross the plate, tying run on third with no outs.
WSSU couldn't capitalize on the efforts as BSU held off a run following a groundout.
Bowie State retaliated with three runs of its own in the bottom portion of the frame. With bases loaded, BSU pushed across a run on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly, and an error. They added a single run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Freshman Lindsey George (Fayetteville, GA) awed at the plate and in the circles for Bowie State. She was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while picking up the victory – allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Freshman Haley Bivens (Fairfield, CT), who relieved George in the circle, had a three-run double in the sixth inning. She allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings.
