Bulldogs Fall in a Tight Sweep to Virginia State

PETERSBURG, Va. – Just one night removed from picking up its second win of the season for a 2-1 start, the first time that's happened since 2008, the Bowie State women's volleyball team (2-2, 0-1 CIAA) fell in a tight, 3-0 sweep to Virginia State (6-7, 1-0 CIAA).

It was a battle through the opening set with the last tie at 18-all before VSU scored four unanswered points to take a 22-18 lead over the Bulldogs. Bowie State would pull within one (22-21) on a service ace from senior Noel Snow (Mount Airy, MD) but the Trojans held off BSU with back-to-back kills and a Bulldog miscue for the 25-21 set win and 1-0 lead.

During the second set, both teams continued to play at a close range until the Trojans grew a five-point lead (20-15) after a service down the stretch. The Bulldogs continued to plow away at the deficit but after capitalizing on three-straight errors by VSU, the Trojans drilled the set win (25-21) on a kill from Jennah Kareem.

Down 2-0, the Bulldogs trailed by four early on before closing the gap to one on an attack from junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA). From there, Bowie State played from behind the entire set before a 5-0 run that fueled VSU's offense, which saw the fate of a BSU comeback weaken. The Trojans would go on to take the third set, 25-18 for the sweep.

The Bulldogs were led by graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) with 11 kills, junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) finished with 16 assists and nine digs. Amaya Cooper led the Trojans with 10 kills, followed by 14 assists from Makenzy Johnson and 16 digs from Najlaa Williams.

Bowie State will return to action on Sept. 20 for a non-conference matchup with Millersville at 7 p.m. on the road.
