MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bowie State women's volleyball team battled Millersville, but the Marauders emerged with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 sweep over the Bulldogs Tuesday night inside Paucillo Gymnasium. BSU drops to 2-3 overall while Millersville snapped a five-match losing skid and improves to 8-6 on the year.
Facing the Marauders, Bowie State got behind early after Millersville took a 16-4 advantage – scoring 12 unanswered points. The momentum quickly shifted though the Bulldogs had to play catch up the remainder of the set, the Marauders used a 5-2 run to take set one.
The Bulldogs regained composure with their eyes set on the evening the match in the second frame. Though Bowie State trailed to start the second set, BSU quickly tied thanks to a block assist from sophomore Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA) and graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) which led to two lead changes. The Bulldogs stole the lead by using a 5-0 run and would maintain the advantage until Millersville tied the set 18-all on a kill. Just when it appeared, the Bulldogs were in favor to take the set win despite a 23-22 lead; the Marauders tied and scored the final two points to steal the set.
A 9-4 run was just what the Bulldogs needed to keep the game alive in the third set. Bowie State had control midway until a tie at 16-all. From there, the Marauders orchestrated a 9-7 scoring frame to outlast the Bulldogs for the sweep.
On the evening, Bowie State hit .00 compared to Millersville's.178, although both teams accounted for 107 total attacks apiece.
Hoges led Bowie State with seven kills while freshman Nadira Avery (Springdale, MD) added five on a .364 hitting performance. Junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) finished with 18 assists, four service aces, four kills and four digs as junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) collected 21 digs.
BSU will look ahead to Thursday, Sept. 22 when the Bulldogs play host to Washington Adventist for a 6 p.m. start from A.C. Jordan Arena.
