BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women's volleyball team tapped its third straight win in A.C. Jordan Arena with a 3-0 sweep against Washington Adventist Thursday night.
The Bulldogs, who won by set scores 25-13, 25-12 and 25-22, improve to 3-3 on the season while the Shock fall to 2-3.
Sophomore Kyzia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA) paced Bowie State with a match-high seven kills while sophomore Abrielle Scrivner (Odenton, MD) notched six kills on a .308 hitting percentage. Junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) filled the stat sheet with five kills (.833 hit %), 22 assists and four digs while freshman Nadira Avery (Springdale, MD) checked in five kills on .333 hitting. Junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) grabbed a match-high 13 digs.
Bowie State posted a .205 hitting percentage on the evening and held a 8-4 ratio over WAU in service aces.
BSU took a 9-1 lead in the first and never looked back. The Shock pulled within four (13-8) after an attacking error but a 12-7 run by the Bulldogs put the margin at a comfortable distance as BSU went ahead 1-0.
Momentum carried BSU in the second set, racing out to a 12-7 frame. A bad set by WAU then led to eight unanswered points for the Bulldogs and a controlling 19-7 lead. Bowie State ended the frame with a 7-3 scoring margin that featured a hitting percentage of .280 and 11 kills.
The third set was a hard fought battle between both teams. WAU gained its first lead over BSU in the match at 4-2 and would sustain that surge including its largest lead (17-13) until the Bulldogs came back roaring fueled by a kill from Avery that led to a 9-2 run and a lead change in favor of BSU. The teams traded the next few points before graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) put the game away with a kill.
Bowie State returns to action this weekend in the CIAA Round-Up hosted by the Bulldogs. BSU will take on St. Augustine's (Saturday, Sept. 24) at 9 a.m., followed by a 9 a.m. matchup with Johnson C. Smith (Sunday, Sept. 24) and a 3 p.m. start against Winston-Salem State (Sunday, Sept. 24).
