Ivey Leads Bulldogs in Five-Set Win Over Virginia Union

BOWIE, Md. – Graduate senior Jailyn Ivey had 26 kills and seven digs Thursday night, leading the Bowie State Bulldogs to a 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-9 win over division foe Virginia Union University in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action in McKeldin Gymnasium.

The victory snapped an 11-game losing skid for Bowie State (6-4, 3-2 CIAA) who had not beat Virginia Union (7-6, 3-3 CIAA) since 2009.

The Bulldogs took the first set despite the Lady Panthers jumping out to a 9-4 lead. A ball handling error tied the set at 12-all as BSU used a 4-1 run and a 16-13 lead that forced VUU to call a timeout. Bowie State held the lead for the duration, and the Bulldogs got a kill from freshman Charity Harris (Brandywine, MD) to seal the first set.

The second frame was fairly close after four ties, but with the score 15-15; the Lady Panthers scored three straight that sent the Bulldogs into timeout mode. Out of the break, VUU went on to outscore Bowie State 8-6 with the set point on an attacking error by BSU. The Bulldogs had a better hitting percentage at .208 compared the Lady Panthers' .180 but BSU committed 12 attacking errors and had seven receiving errors to VUU's seven attacking errors and three receiving miscues.

Similar to the second frame, the third was the same as both teams went back-and-forth with one another until the Bulldogs used a 6-2 scoring frame that forced the Lady Panthers to call a timeout, as BSU owned a 21-17 lead. VUU scored two straight to close the gap to two (21-19) but graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) spiked down the middle that led to three unanswered points before the Bulldogs set point came from a kill from Ivey.

The Lady Panthers grew a 12-8 lead in the fourth, Bowie State called a timeout but that would not be enough to cool VUU off as the Lady Panthers ballooned a lead as large as seven (20-13). A kill from Ivey would stop the bleeding for BSU but it was all VUU in the fourth set thanks to a 5-1 run down the stretch.

In the fifth set, the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points as they eventually went up 8-3. BSU's lead then grew 11-5 as the Lady Panthers called a timeout. VUU pulled within four (13-9) capped by a kill from Aireanna Johnson and then followed with a service error giving Bowie State a set point in which Ivey iced it with a kill.

Hoges joined Ivey in double-digit kills with 10 to go along with four blocks, including three solo while junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) recorded a new season-high 38 assists, 15 digs, and seven kills. Junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) chipped in 14 digs, followed by sophomore Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA) with nine kills and eight digs.

Bowie State returns to action Sunday, Oct. 2 at Elizabeth City State for a key divisional matchup with the Lady Vikings at 2 p.m. in the R.L. Vaughan Center.
