The Series
No. 9 Bowie State holds a 1-0 record in the all-time series against Saginaw Valley State, the first meeting occurred in 2021 with the Bulldogs taking a 28-19 victory at Bulldog Stadium.
HBCU Celebration
The contest marks the historic celebration of historically black colleges and universities with both Bowie State and Saginaw Valley State joining forces to showcase the culture and traditions of HBCU's. Prior to the game, on Thursday, Sept. 8, there will be a showing of the film, "Tell Them We Arise," followed by a panel discussion. Some traditional HBCU social activities, including a "step show," will be among the pre-game events at SVSU on Friday, Sept. 9.

The Bulldogs are coming off a gritty win over now ranked No. 24 New Haven last weekend. Bowie State outscored the Chargers 20-3 in the fourth quarter including the final drive with 1:21 left as graduate senior Dion "DJ" Golatt, Jr. (Largo, MD) led the charge connecting with redshirt junior
Kwincy Hall (Washington, D.C.) for a nine-yard reception TD, followed by a two point conversion to pull out the dramatic win for Bowie State, 27-20.
Golatt, Jr. finished with 17-of-29 passes for 266-yards and three TDs while redshirt sophomore
Sam Doku (Silver Spring, MD) had eight carries for 53 yards and a score and redshirt junior
Keshane Hinckley (Laurel, MD) caught seven passes for 106-yards and a TD. Both redshirt sophomores
Keith Williams (Baltimore, MD) and
Shawan Lewis (Baltimore, MD) paced the defense with five tackles apiece as Lewis tacked on a sack. Both graduate senior
Ellison Jordan (Upper Marlboro, MD) and redshirt junior
Cameron Chesley (Fort Washington, MD) contributed two sacks apiece in the winning effort.

The Accolades
Two Bulldogs took home this week's CIAA Player of the Week honors including Golatt, Jr. who was named the CIAA's Quarterback of the Week and graduate senior
Quinton Bobo (White Plains, MD) was named the league's Offensive Lineman of the Week after tacking on 361 total yards of offense featuring 268 yards through the air against the Chargers.
Golatt, Jr. also earned an Honor Roll nod on the DC Touchdown Club College Football Player of the Week list.
The Polls
Bowie State dropped to No. 9 this week in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Poll despite the win over ranked opponent New Haven. However, the Bulldogs remained atop in the HBCU DII Coaches Poll and moved up a slot in the D2Football.com Top-25 poll at No. 11.
Saginaw Valley State at a Glance
The Cardinals finished fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 2021 with a 7-4 overall record and 4-3 mark in league action.
Similar to Bowie State, SVSU started the 2022 season 1-0 as well, coming off a 72-9 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 1. SVSU rushed for nine touchdowns while holding the Bobcats to just five first down on the game. The 72 points scored were the most scored by the Cardinals since 1997.
SVSU rushed for 372 yards on 52 carries and eight TDs. Austin Bills had 10 carries for 72 yards while the quarterback position featured two playmakers in Willie Taylor and Andrew Brito. Brito finished 7-for-13 passing for 59 yards, and Taylor was 5-for-8 for 71 yards. Jacoby Sanders led the receiving unit with two catches worth 61-yards. Defensively, Micah Cretsinger grabbed six tackles.
The Cardinals also received votes (20) on the AFCA DII Coaches Poll this week. SVSU is led by Randy Brady in his third season at the helm.
