Men’s Basketball to Face No. 24 Claflin in Nationally Televised Game on Saturday

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University men's basketball team will continue Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play against No. 24 Claflin University in a nationally televised contest on the CW via Black College Sports Broadcasting Network (BCSBN) on Saturday, Jan. 7. Game time is set for 3:02 p.m. inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

The Series
The Panthers own a 3-1 record against the Bulldogs since 2018. BSU has lost the past two contests including a 78-74 setback on the road on Jan. 8, 2022.

Last Time Out
Bowie State fell (73-64) in overtime to the visiting Saint Augustine's Falcons on Thursday. The Bulldogs forced the game into overtime, outscoring SAU 30-24 but in the extra session – BSU went 0-6 from the field with its lone point coming from free throw as the Falcons used a 10-1 scoring frame to come away with the win. The Bulldogs were led by senior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) with 15 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Caleb Johnson (Baltimore, MD) added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Freshman Warren Mouganda (Bowie, MD) tacked on 10 points off the bench to round out the double digit scoring for Bowie State.
 
Although he didn't see action on Thursday, Mark Bradshaw (West Chester, PA) leads BSU in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game (12th in CIAA) while Drayton follows with 12.6 points (15th in CIAA), respectively. Bradshaw is 2nd in the league for 3-point field goals (33). The top rebounder for the Bulldogs is Webb who posts 4.6 rebounds per game while Anthony Carpenter (Reisterstown, MD) is right behind at 3.9 rebounds per night, respectively.
 
A Look at the #24 Panthers
No. 24 Claflin University (11-1, 3-1 CIAA) enter Saturday's on a two-game win streak. CU defeated nationally ranked Virginia Union 63-58 on Thursday led by 52.2-percent shooting from the field. The Panthers had four players score in double figures led by Timothy McElroy with 12 points while Shamarie McLeod added 11 points, and both Bryson Dennis and Jailen Williams chipping in 10 points each. Dennis is the Panthers leading scorer, averaging 13.4 points per game which ranks 9th in the conference.   

After breaking into the NABC Coaches Top-25 Poll a week ago, the Panthers climbed up a spot to No. 24 this week. The ranking came after a 10-1 start to the 2022-23 season and an 85-84 overtime win over Clayton. The ranking is the first for the Panthers since 2018.
 
Upcoming Schedule
Bowie State will host Fayetteville State on Monday, Jan. 9 to wrap its three-game home stand. The game is slated to start at 7:30 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
