Men's Basketball Hosts Millersville Wednesday Night

BOWIE, MD --- The Bowie State men's basketball team will host Millersville on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. inside A.C. Jordan Arena for non-conference action. The game will broadcast live on the Bulldogs Sports Network.

Bag Policy
• Fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag into the stadium all of which are subject to search.
• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
• Small clutch bags, measuring 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap
• All other bags will not be permitted. A list of prohibited bags includes but is not limited to: purses, backpacks, drawstring bags that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot safeguard items that are not permitted into the stadium.


The Matchup
Bowie State is 3-1 against Millersville since 2014. In fact, the lone loss against the Marauders happened last season with the Bulldogs falling 69-60 on the road. Wednesday's match up will be the fourth meeting between the two programs.

Last Time Out
The Bowie State men's basketball team got a 20-point showing from the bench, but fell 82-61 to the California (PA) Vulcans at home Saturday to wrap up the Bowie State Tip-Off Classic inside A.C. Jordan Arena. The Bulldogs (1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Kyree Freeman-Davis, who had 12 points. Caleb Johnson tacked on 12 points and Amare Wimbush helped out with 12 points and seven rebounds. Joel Webb pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Bowie State offense which grabbed 12 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points.The Bulldogs defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 14 California (PA) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Kevon Corley led the way individually for the Bulldogs with one steal.

Last Season for Bowie State
The Bulldogs are looking to improve upon last years finish at 7-22 overall and 5-11 in the conference during the 2022-23 campaign under the leadership of Darrell Brooks who will be entering his 13th season. BSU was 3-11 at home and 4-9 on the road a year ago. The Bulldogs averaged 66.9 points per game and allowed its opponents to score 73.7 points in 2022-23 that ranked 10th and 11th amongst the CIAA. A notable team highlight for BSU last season was that the Bulldogs ranked second in the league for blocked shots at 118 on the year and an average of 4.07 blocks per outing.

CIAA Predictions
The Bowie State men's basketball team was selected to finish 10th overall in the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Preseason Poll announced by the league office back on Sept. 25. The Preseason Teams and Poll were chosen by the league's coaches and Sports Information Directors. Fayetteville State was voted to win the CIAA Championship, followed by Claflin at No. 2, Virginia Union at No. 3, Winston-Salem State at No. 4 and Virginia State at No. 5. 

The Newcomers
BSU will introduce four newcomers, including three transfers for the 2023-24 season. Of the three transfers, two came from Division I programs including Corey Barnes - a transfer from Delaware State who appeared in 20 games for the Hornets in 2022-23, averaging .6 points, .3 assists and .8 rebounds per game while Deven Richmond, a transfer from Howard who averaged 3.3 points, 1.6 rebounds in 27 games played and two starts for the Bisons.

The Returners
The Bulldogs are not without veteran leadership as BSU has nine returners from last year's squad including Mark Bradshaw who ranked second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) and Joel Webb, the team's leading rebounder (5.2 rbg). Additionally, Bowie State will look to get more from veteran guards Anthony Carpenter who averaged 5.3 points, Caleb Butler who shot 38-percent from the field, averaging 8.0 points and dishing out 2.5 assists per game last season. Additionally, the Bulldogs can expect to get more productivity from both Kyree Freeman-Davis and Amare Wimbush. Wimbush earned CIAA Rookie of the Week accolades twice last season, starting seven of the 24 games he played. Freeman-Davis posted 7.1 points (43-percent shooting) and a shooting percentage of 34-percent from beyond the arc last season.

About Millersville
The Marauders are 2-0 entering Wednesday's non-conference competition. In its season opener, Millersville defeated Livingstone, 86-73 and then edged Virginia Union, 80-71 to conclude the Ron Wilson Classic in Pucillo Gymnasium. Matt Dade finished with 19 points against the Panthers, followed by Jahme Ested's six rebounds and Jaden Faulkner's six assist. Millersville won the PSAC East for the second-straight season, posting a 15-7 conference record with forward Matt Dade earning All-PSAC East First Team honors led by Dade who is a two-time All-PSAC East honoree that averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds last season. 

Looking Ahead
Bowie State will travel to the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) on Saturday, Nov. 18 with a tip-off slated for 12 noon. The contest will serve as the first road contest for the Bulldogs for 2023-24.
