Women's Basketball Travels to Claflin for Conference Opener on National Television Saturday

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team will open up Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play Saturday, Dec. 9 as the Bulldogs will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to face Claflin at 1 p.m. inside Tullis Arena. The game will broadcast live to a national audience through the HBCUGo App or at www.HBCUGo.tv.  The broadcast was made available through a partnership between the CIAA and the Allen Media Group (AMG) free-streaming platform, HBCU Go, the leading media provider for the nation's 107 Historically Black Colleges & Universities.

The Series
  • This will be th sixth meeting between Bowie State and Claflin on Saturday.
  • The Bulldogs are 5-0 all-time against the Lady Panthers including a 63-53 win last season in Bowie, Md.
  • BSU returns all four players that registered double digits in scoring led by Katerra Myers who scored 15 points and eight rebounds agianst Claflin last year.
  • Bowie State holds a 4-0 conference record against Claflin.

Last Whistle
BSU erased a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to secure the 82-71 comeback win over Goldey-Beacom on Monday night in non-conference action. The Bulldogs (5-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 27 points, six rebounds and three steals. Katerra Myers tacked on 14 points and Mia Smith helped out with 10 points. Led by Myers' two offensive rebounds, BSU pulled down 10 boards that resulted in six second chance points. Bowie State forced 22 Goldey-Beacom turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Jayla Irvin led the way individually for the Bulldogs with three steals.

The win marked the third-straight win for Bowie State and improved the Bulldogs record to 2-0 at home. The Bulldogs are 5-2 entering Saturday's matchup against the Claflin Lady Panthers. 

About Bowie State
Through seven games, Bowie State has averaged 68.1 points per game while allowing its opponents average 63.9 points. From the field, BSU is shooting 38-percent, including 23-percent from the 3-point line and 64-percent from the free throw line. Harris leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.1 points which is a conference best. She leads the team in assists (2.1) and steals (2.1) which all rank amongst the conference at No. 20 and sixth, respectively. The Bulldogs top rebounder is Myers who averages 6.1 rebounds per game who also averages a team's third-best 8.3 points per outing. Additionally, Mia Smith posts 9.6 points and 5.6 rebounds which are both second-best on the team at the guard position. 

The Bulldogs scored 82 points against GBC which was the most this season thus far that featured a season-high 30 field goals made and 11 assists (twice). While BSU's five win's were all impressive, the Bulldogs most notable victory so far on the season came against ranked California (PA) on Nov. 27 where Bowie State snapped the Vulcans five game winning streak with a convincing 74-61 win at home led by 22 points off the bench from Irvin.

Scouting Claflin
The Lady Panthers are 2-2, coming off a 85-61 loss to Coker on Nov. 29 at home. In the loss, Claflin shot 33-percent from the field, connecting only 17-of-51 shots and owned 25 turnovers. Lauren Scott finished with 11 points, while Destiny Coleman chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Claflin returns five players from last year's roster led by Nya Morris who led the team in scoring with 12.1 points per game to go along with an average of  6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists which were also a team-best in 2022-23. Additionally, the Lady Panthers also brought back Lauren Scott who averaged 11.6 ppg and made the most 3-pointers with 49 on the season. Claflin finished the 2022-23 season 12-14 overall and 5-11 in conference play, falling to Shaw in the CIAA quarterfinal round, 62-49 on Feb. 21. 

Next Up
Bowie State will return home to host Johnson C. Smith in CIAA cross division action on Monday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m. BSU is 10-11 against JCSU since 2009 but the Bulldogs have won the last three outings, including a 62-48 win on the road last season.
