BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State softball team will begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play with participation at the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Elizabeth City State Thursday, Mar. 23 through Saturday, Mar. 25 at the South Park Sports Complex located at 110 Capital Trace, Elizabeth City, N.C.
The Schedule
In total, the Bulldogs will compete in six games beginning with an 11 a.m. tilt with Winston-Salem State (6-6) on Thursday at Field 1., followed by a 4 p.m. game with Saint Augustine's (2-6) on Field 4. Friday's games features a 11 a.m. start with Johnson C. Smith (1-4) on Field 1 followed by a 1:30 p.m. start with defending champions Claflin (12-8) on Field 2.Â
On Saturday (3/25), BSU will take on Livingstone (1-4) at 12:30 p.m. (Field 4) and then a matchup with Fayetteville State (5-12) at 3 p.m. (Field 1).
The Bulldogs
Bowie State enters the CIAA Round-Up with a 13-9 overall record and 5-2 on the year at neutral sites. The Bulldogs are coming off a split with the Goldey-Beacom on Sunday, Mar. 19. BSU defeated the Lightning 10-2 in game one but fell short 7-6 in the nightcap after trailing 6-2 in the third inning.Â
Sophomore
Lindsey George has been the offensive spark for the Bulldogs leading the team with 21 hits, 17 runsÂ
(3rd on Team) scored, 14 RBIÂ (3rd on Team) and three home runs on the season for an average of .429 at the plate. The Fayetteville, Ga., native was named this week's CIAA Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts last week.
In addition to the CIAA Weekly honors, the Bulldogs claimed three of the four spots. Along with George, sophomore
Brittany Brewer was named this week's CIAA Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore
Karen Fritzges tabbed the CIAA Pitcher of the Week. Fritzges has a 3-1 record in the circle for Bowie State, striking out 15 batters in 31 innings pitched thus far this season. She has an ERA of 1.35. Meanwhile, Brewer leads BSU in total putouts with 93 on the year at the first basemane position for a fielding percentage of .970 out of 100 total chances. The Savage, Md., native has only committed three errors through 22 games.Â
