Bulldogs Put up 6 Runs in Win over Winston-Salem State

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --  The Bowie State Bulldogs scored six runs en route to a 6-1 win over the Rams on Thursday afternoon during the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the Sports Complex.

Senior Akirra Pullen (6-4) got the win for Bowie State (14-9, 1-0 CIAA). The right-hander went three shutout innings, giving up four hits, one walk and striking out one. Sophomore Lindsey George started the ballgame and went four innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking none and striking out four.

Pullen led the way offensively for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Brittany Brewer put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. George also chipped in, going 2-for-3 for Bowie State with a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the fourth inning. Senior Shanya Gordon came across to score the lone run of the inning for Bowie State and get them on the board.

The Bulldogs then held the Rams scoreless before expanding their lead in the sixth inning. Bowie State pushed across a run on freshman Sydney Edmond's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Winston-Salem narrowed Bowie State's lead to 2-1 before the Bulldogs stretched the advantage to 6-1 in the seventh inning. The Bulldogs hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring four runs. The score remained 6-1 for the rest of the game, as Bowie State coasted to the win.

GAME NOTES
» Bowie State's highest scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed four runs across.
» The Bulldogs out-hit the Rams at a 10-6 clip.
» Both sophomore Jayla Hill and sophomore Morgan Joseph stole two bases in Thursday's game.
» BSU pitchers faced 27 Winston-Salem hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out five.
» Pullen led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
» WSSU was led offensively by sophomore Cunningham, who went 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will face Johnson C. Smith on Friday (3/24) at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup with the defending champions Claflin at 1:30 p.m.

Looking Ahead
The Bowie State Bulldogs will return home on Mar. 30 for a non-conference doubleheader with Washington Adventist at 1 p.m. from the BSU Softball Field.
